One Last Chance to Sing for Former Baldwin Choir Director Regis Shalley

Dr. Shalley died on March 6.

Former Baldwin High School choir members will have one last chance to sing for the late Dr. Regis V. Shalley.

Dr. Shalley, who died on March 6 at the age of 88, will have a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Baldwin Borough at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, and choir alumni are invited to attend and sing in honor of Shalley at the conclusion of the Mass.

Shalley was the choral director at Baldwin High from 1954 to 1981.

Friends are being received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home in Brentwood Borough on Tuesday, March 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, March 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral prayer will also be held at Slater's on Thursday morning at 10:15.

According to his obituary on the Slater website, Shalley, of Jefferson Hills Borough, graduated from Duquesne University with bachelor's and master's degrees in music education in 1949 and 1955, respectively, before receiving a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1972.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was a dance band musician and conductor with the Army Air Force Special Services. He also conducted the Pennsylvania National Guard Band.

During his time at Baldwin, Shalley directed boys and girls glee clubs, the Baldwin Highlander Choir and the Baldwinaires and served as the chairman of the school's fine arts department for five years.

His family suggests that donations be made to the Baldwin-Whitehall Friends of the Theater Arts, P.O. Box 10985, Pittsburgh, PA 15236, or to Celtic Healthcare, 150 Scharberry Ln., Mars, PA 16046.

Dr. Shalley was a 28-year member of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, in which he served terms as Vice President and President and as a member of association's executive council. He was also a longtime member of the National Association for Music Education and the American Choral Directors Association.

He was a member of The American Legion and a parishioner at Saint Elizabeth's.
