Nearby: Sarris Candies Damaged by Fire

'The Easter Bunny is safe.' - Owner Bill Sarris

About a dozen employees safely escaped a fire at  in Canonsburg Borough early on Friday morning.

Kevin Wittik, who works in Sarris' shipping department, said that he arrived at the Canonsburg store at around 6:30 a.m. when smoke first started showing.

"I got in and got everyone out," Wittik said. "Smoke was just starting to be visible, but then it got pretty intense."

Wittik and fellow employees gathered in the store's parking lot as fire crews worked to contain the fire, which appeared to start in the ice cream parlor-side of the building—mostly in the roof and attic.

One concern for Sarris was how it could recover in time for the upcoming Easter season.

"We're gonna have a lot of catching up to do," Wittik said.

Owner Bill Sarris was optimistic.

"There is some cleaning to do," Sarris said. "We'll hopefully be back in business as soon as possible."

When asked when that could be, he said, "Days instead of weeks."

Sarris trucks are out on Friday, he said, and deliveries are being made.

"The Easter Bunny is safe," Sarris said.
