ReplyThey also cut 51B going through Baldwin to downtown as well, which affected many who depended on this to get to town. Perhaps consideration should be given to having some type of parking near the Denise T stop to allow people to take the T if PAT will not reinstate the bus routes?

cc- I lived in a state where food and clothing was taxed and our property and school taxes never went about $1500 in the entire time I lived there. I have ZERO problem with taxing those sort of things. Because then the people buying the highest ticket clothing pay the highest tax.

ReplyI would hope they would lower it considerably. My assessment has increased substantially and that increase and the payroll tax increase will take a signifigant chunk of money each month from our wallets.
I really wish the state would do away with this insane property tax and raise sales tax for everyone. I've lived outside of PA and have never seen anything like what goes on here, especially in Allegheny county.

ReplyThey need to look at homes near corners of streets (I can name several: Edward and Towervue are good examples) where people park and clog up traffic and make seeing oncoming cars an issue. If you have a driveway, your car(s) should be parked in it. Any other vehicle should be parked AWAY from a corner. I have almost gotten hit at least 4 times because I have not been able to see an oncoming car due to another vehicle being parked at an intersection corner.

ReplyI am so glad that this parking issue was brought up. 2 years ago I had to contact Baldwin as we had a resident on our street parking on the corner near a stop sign. I saw several almost collisions (and was almost in one myself a few times) before the police told them it had to be a certain distance from the stop sign. And now it's happening again on another corner. Most of these residents have driveways so they should be using them.
After the huge snow storm my street was a mess because of cars parked in the street. It's a very simple solution--you send out an a notice via email, letter or social media for when the season starts stating they cannot park on the street at all. If they are parked there, then the car is towed at THEIR expense. I lived in MN for a few years and this is how parking was handled, with virtually no issues.

To me it seems rather odd that a non-profit charitable company (or so they want us to believe) has 3 private jets. Does that seem charitable to anyone?
UPMC has been allowed to operate as a charity for too long and needs to pay their share in property taxes. How many of us in Baldwin have seen their property taxes rise (mine have doubled) since the recent assessment? Why are citizens forced to bear the huge cost for these taxes when UPMC plays the 'charitable' game while their executives fly in private jets and pay for politicians trips etc? The articles that cc has posted are very telling, indeed. Especially when you read about how sneaky they were about buying people's property and not telling them the name of the buyer, along with threatening eminent domain (which is illegal for private business).
Let them take their ball and go home. The Pittsburgh area has been noted in the past 5 years for having some of the highest healthcare costs in the nation. That comes from lack of competition. Look at how quick UPMC was to slap Highmark with a lawsuit for wanting to buy West Penn. Highmark was simply trying to even the competition, and you can't fault them for that.
(Not saying that Highmark doesn't have their issues but it was stated that Highmark voluntarily pays property taxes on their downtown Pittsburgh buildings.)
I have been hoping for years that UPMC would be forced to account for their actions.
