A landscaper was charging my elderly neighbors $50 to mow their lawn (~60ft x 130ft) once a week. The landscaper was also charging $80 a treatment to treat the lawn 5 times during the season. My teenage son is now mowing their lawns at $30 when the grass gets high (about every 7-10 days). They are happy that my son is saving them money and he is happy that he has some money in his pocket. I treat their lawn with Scotts at $30 an application. The two lawns pay for the fertilizer (~$60 for a large bag) and I have enough left over to treat my own lawn. I was able to save them $250 a season and also treat my own lawn in the process for free. A win-win for all.

This is so sad to me. Being a long-time member of the former WCC, having our summertime memories destroyed when it closed , and now reading that its being vandalized like this, just breaks my heart. I, along with a very few, dedicated members, put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into trying to keep this Club open. For it to have closed under the circumstances that it did, to see it sitting empty up there for the last 2 summers looking like nothing more than another empty eye sore for the community and, finally, to read how this property is being disrespected, is very unfortunate. Shame on ALL involved. You know who you are.

Lawrence- You may want to check with the Gateway engineers as they have all the engineering maps and specs for all the streets within Whitehall Borough. To my knowledge they have been the borough engineer almost since day 1 and you should check with them if nobody remembers when the changes were made to Stilley and Doyle Roads.

I am all for the law too. I do not know how Mike McQuery could live with himself after seeing what Sandusky was doing firsthand. He was supposed to have told Joe Paterno. In my book that is not enough. He should have went straight to the police no questions asked. My mother told me that she knows if I would have saw Sandusky they would have had to carry Sandusky out of the shower in a body bag.

Here are the Duquesne teachers salaries as of 2010. However, I can't confirm they are the lowest paid- http://php.app.com/PAteachers10/search.php Use the link and filter to Duquense City SD.

Sidewalks have their place in the city as the streets are more narrow, crowded with parking which makes it impossible for people to walk without a sidewalk. My elderly neighbor moved across the street from me from Beechview (city) within the past couple years. She told me what a PITA it is to maintain your sidewalk and does not miss them at all especially during the winter. As Allen and Tyrion alluded to there are certain right of way/easements in place, I don't see Whitehall using them to have people sidewalks put in. Unless you live on a busy street (i.e. Weyman, Baptist, Brownsville, 51 and maybe Prospect) about 85% of the streets are wide and walker freindly. So let's get off our dupas and walk...its good for you. :)

Sandra- I agree with you that a charter school could be an option. In reading other articles about this event, I believe they were looking into a local charter for these kids. However, there was no success so far. Anyhow, to bus those kids from Duquense to Young Scholars in Baldwin Township would be a 35-40 minute bus ride each way. To bus them to Paynter would probably be a 30 minute ride each way. I back Dr. Randy on this as more resources would be needed to help these kids and $8,000 will not cover it and as a taxpayer I would fight it as we pay for more than enough remediation, ESL and other programs without additional help from the State or Federal Governments. As CC said, I hope a good solution is found as the kids have the odds against them and they deserve a good eductaion.
