It's going to a be a chilly start to the Memorial Day weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for Allegheny County, including Baldwin Borough, Baldwin Township and Whitehall Borough. The advisory will remain in effect from 3 to 8 a.m. on Saturday as temperatures hover around 32 degrees. Be sure to cover your sensitive plants and bring potted plants indoors. Pennsylvania Sen. Matthew H. Smith, whose jurisdiction includes Whitehall Borough, recently presented Whitehall Councilwoman Kathleen N. DePuy with a Senate citation based on her recent appointment as President of the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs. State Reps. Harry Readshaw and Erin Molchany, whose jurisdictions also include Whitehall, joined Smith to congratulate DePuy during a ceremony in Hershey, PA, on May 7. Let there be no argument: They know their math at St. Gabe's. Seventh-graders from St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin School in Whitehall Borough placed first in the nation during a recent First in Math competition. Playing a computerized version of the popular 24 Game, St. Gabe's seventh-graders put together an average game score that was better than all other schools' seventh-graders'. And as an entire school—combining average scores of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders—the Gators placed ninth in the country (out of approximately 5,000 schools). Update: The watch has expired. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for southwestern Pennsylvania, including Baldwin Borough, Whitehall Borough and Baldwin Township. The watch remains in effect through 10 p.m. on Wednesday, according to representatives from the National Weather Service, which say that some storms could be severe with damaging winds.
