St. Gabriel School Burglary Caught on Tape

The Whitehall Borough break-in was recorded by security cameras.

A person has been charged with two counts each of burglary, theft and criminal trespass at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin School in Whitehall Borough after stealing two TVs and a radio from the school over its Christmas and New Year's break. The thefts were discovered on Jan. 3—the day that students returned from break—according to a letter sent from school Principal Barbara Sawyer to students' parents and guardians. The letter states that the burglary was able to be captured by security cameras, and through an investigation done by the Whitehall Police Department, a suspect was identified and arrested on Jan. 4. St. Gabriel Pastor John R. Haney has requested that the arrested not be identified, but Haney said that the person is not a…

Loose Dogs Continue to Run Amok on Greenlee Road

And other Whitehall Borough police stories from July.

Bad Dogs! (Still) Whitehall Borough police officers went to the 500 block of Greenlee Road at around 5:08 p.m. on Wednesday in response to a report that two dogs were running loose there. Police have gotten repeated complaints about the two dogs, which are owned by Michael Grande, 56, of 525 Greenlee, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. "This is obviously, in the scope of the world, not up there with major crimes," Dolfi said, "but it is a potentially dangerous situation and a nuisance." Whitehall police are charging Grande with violating a borough ordinance that prohibits dogs and cats from running at large. And Dolfi said that his department is also pursuing charges based on state animal control laws. "It's totally getting out …

I am sympathetic to all things animal related. However, roaming dogs cannot be condoned. Our family cat, Rhonda, is assumed to have gone missing due to roaming dogs in my old neighborhood. We cannot be sure if Rhonda was injured or if she ran off with one of the dogs to start a separate family but it has been 26 years and I am pretty sure that either way, Rhonda is dead. Please keep everyone safe…   more ›

Hammers and Shovels Fight on Leona Drive

And other Whitehall police notes from April 24-30.

Leona Drive Fight Whitehall Borough police officers came to the 4800 block of Leona Drive on Saturday at around 12:11 a.m. in response to a fight between two men that involved hammers and shovels, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. Officers stopped the fight upon arrival and discovered that the two men "have a history together," Dolfi said. The men had started arguing sometime before the fight before that argument escalated into violence. One of the men was injured at the scene, and workers from Medical Rescue Team South Authority responded to treat him. His injuries were not life-threatening, Dolfi said. Both men are being charged with crimes—Matthew Paga, 19, of 4894 Leona, with criminal mischief and Alexander Frich, 24, of …

Brotherly Un-Love, Runaway from Mt. Lebo, Disturbance at Giant Eagle and More

Whitehall Borough police briefs from April 10-16.

Oh, Brother A man came into the Whitehall Borough police station at around 9:03 p.m. on Wednesday regarding a traffic citation. The man was being charged with making an illegal left turn from Stewart Avenue onto Route 51 (by Dairy Queen) on March 2, but the man said that he wasn't operating his vehicle at that time. Upon further discussion and investigation, police determined that the driver in violation of the traffic law was the man's brother, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. Dolfi said that the man gave his brother's information when he was stopped by police on March 2, and as a result, police are charging the brother—Keith Grimm, 29, of 49 Rostock St. in Pittsburgh's Spring Hill-Cityview neighborhood—with making a false …
