VIDEO: Whitehall Library's Kelly Is Pirates Community Champion

Kelly honored at PNC Park for literacy programs.

Whitehall Borough knows that it has a gem in Paula Kelly, the director of the Whitehall Public Library. And after Friday night, on the diamond of PNC Park, a good bit of the rest of the Pittsburgh area knows that, too. The Pittsburgh Pirates honored Kelly on Friday as one of its 2012 Community Champions. She joined Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting and a number of other front-office types for an awards ceremony at PNC prior to the team's 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. "This award is given to six area individuals who are 'champions' in their community," said Chaz Kellem, manager of diversity initiatives for the Pirates, "and have positively contributed to the betterment of the diverse community in our region." Prom Outfits to Be Given Away at Century III Mall for Eligible Teens

Girls event will run from March 6-10 at the mall. Boys event is in April in downtown Pittsburgh.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services' Project Prom Shop will again make available free prom dresses to eligible high school girls who find the cost of a prom outfit not within their family's budget. In addition, young men who are or whose families are currently receiving services through that county department are invited to participate in Project Prom 2012 for Gentlemen this year. The girls event will take place on the first floor of Century III Mall in West Mifflin Borough from Tuesday, March 6, through Friday, March 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The boys event takes place in the Human Services Building at One Smithfield Street in downtown Pittsburgh from 5 to 8 p.m. on every Thursday in …

Port Authority Plans Holiday Schedule for Thanksgiving, Weekend Detours

Bus routes with stops downtown, on the North Side and in the Strip District will operate with temporary detours during holiday festivities.

Port Authority of Allegheny County will operate all bus, light-rail "T" and incline service on a holiday schedule on Thursday, Nov. 24 (Thanksgiving), and will operate with detours and special schedules throughout the weekend on bus routes with stops in downtown Pittsburgh, on the city's North Side and in the Strip District. Detours will be in effect from 7 to 11 a.m. on Thursday for about 30 bus routes that serve downtown and the North Shore neighborhood due to annual PNC YMCA Turkey Trot races, which begin at 9 a.m. at PNC Park. Detour details are posted at www.portauthority.org, or you can contact a Port Authority customer service representative at 412-442-2000. For the speech- and hearing-impaired (TTY), call 412-231-7007. Softball Celebration at Princess Lanes (Weekly Photo Gallery)

Baldwin-Whitehall's team of 9-12 year olds won a Mayor's Cup title at PNC Park on July 25.

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch publishes a weekly photo gallery of interesting and/or important images caught around our area. Any photo taken from a spot in Baldwin Township, Baldwin Borough or Whitehall Borough qualifies; though, we'll occasionally accept photos that are right on our neighbors' borders as well. For last week's gallery, B-W Patch reader Brian Gregg submitted photos and a video taken from his residence on Frich Drive in Baldwin Borough of a thunderstorm over the Pittsburgh area on July 28.
