UPDATE: All Community College of Allegheny County locations will have a 10 a.m. start, according to the college's website. PHOTOS: Int'l Mother Language Day at Young Scholars Charter School

Students learn about Vietnamese, English, Arabic, Swahili, Bengali, Spanish, Uzbek, Turkish and Bemba.

Educators at the Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter School in Baldwin Township continue to expose their students to cultural diversity in a number of ways, including an International Winter Celebration this past December and an International Mother Language Day event on Thursday. On Thursday, each of the school's classrooms learned about the culture of nine countries with different primary or prevalent languages: Vietnam (Vietnamese), the United States (English), Jordan (Arabic), Kenya (Swahili), Bangladesh (Bengali), Mexico (Spanish), Uzbekistan (Uzbek), Turkey (Turkish) and Zambia (Bemba). UPDATES: The Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter School, in Baldwin Township, has canceled its "Extended Day" program for Friday. Young Scholars students taking a B-W School District bus will be dismissed at 2:50 p.m. According to WPXI, the Dance Workshop by Shari, in Whitehall, and the Keystone Canine Club, in Baldwin Borough, have canceled their evening classes.   more ›

PHOTOS: Int'l Winter Celebration at Young Scholars Charter School

Students learn about Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, Chinese New Year, Hanukkah, Eid, Three Kings Day and more.

Students at the Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter School in Baldwin Township are exposed to cultural diversity perhaps more than any other children in the area. And that was never more true than on Thursday afternoon when the school hosted an International Winter Celebration. Students learned about an array of holiday traditions that day, including ones from Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, Chinese New Year, Hanukkah, Eid, Three Kings Day and more. Each individual classroom hosted a presentation and a display demonstrating what its students learned about each of those holidays. To go along with a two-hour delay for that district's schools, students at Baldwin Borough's Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic School and Whitehall Borough's St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin School will also have a two-hour delay on Tuesday, according to KDKA. Young Scholars Charter School Plans to Add Students

The school's officials are applying for a revision of its conditional building use in Baldwin Township so as to increase enrollment.

Officials from the Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter School are having no trouble finding students. In fact, children are on a waiting list to gain admission to the public school found on Newport Drive in Baldwin Township. But whether or not the school's building will legally be able to hold all of those kids is another matter. On Tuesday night, Young Scholars President Dr. Melih Demirkan and CEO Alpaslan Ozdogan appeared before the Baldwin Township Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners to officially apply for a revision of the school's conditional use application in the township. Demirkan said that officials at Young Scholars, which has a current enrollment of just fewer than 180 students, want to add 40 more …

I don't agree that Baldwin schools are on a downward spiral and compare our cirriculum to any of the "top-ranked" districts in Pittsburgh. I have worked in several districts and being a licensed counselor and educator find many appealing aspects of our district.
