VIDEOS: 8-Year-Old Baldwin Girl Out-Wrestles Boys

'Maleah the Mauler' has been a force for Baldwin youth wrestling.

Girls just want to have fun. And sometimes, that means beating up boys. OK, not exactly beating them up—but at least beating them. Maleah Pacella, a third-grader from W.R. Paynter Elementary School in Baldwin Borough, has been a force to be reckoned with this season for the Baldwin youth wrestling program. Just watch the videos in the media gallery above for proof. Competing against males most of the time, Maleah, whose family lives in north Baldwin, has gone 12-1 in the Keystone Wrestling League this season, according to an article in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. She was even invited to participate in a girls state championships event recently in New Jersey and went 4-1 in that tournament, losing only to the state champion, who was two …

New 'Baldwin Highlander Pass' on Sale Now

Passes will be good for admission to home sports events throughout the academic year.

In an effort to make admission to scholastic sports events at Baldwin High School easier and more affordable, the Baldwin-Whitehall School District will debut the "Baldwin Highlander Pass" this fall—a one-time-pay ticket that will allow access to events year-round. A Highlander Pass includes general admission for all home Baldwin High football games, soccer games, basketball games, swimming & diving meets, wrestling matches, lacrosse games and volleyball matches during a given school year (approximately 80 total events). The passes cannot be used, however, for WPIAL or PIAA playoffs games or for any team tournament events. Nevertheless, the passes should create a significant cost savings for many families, especially those that take …

Man Threatens Baldwin AD at Wrestling Tournament

Also, more harassment of Baldwin Health Center man and other Whitehall Borough police news from Feb. 21-27.

Man Cited for Harassment After Run-in with Baldwin Athletics Director Charles Pritchard, 57, of 501 Leland Drive in Baldwin Borough, was forced to leave the WPIAL AAA Section 2 individual wrestling championships at Baldwin High School on Saturday after Baldwin High's Athletics Director Vince Sortino summoned Whitehall Borough police to the school to handle Pritchard. Sortino said that Pritchard was involved in a near-fight at the high school with another man and that he accosted Sortino himself, Whitehall police Deputy Chief Richard M. Danko reported. Sortino made the call to police at around 8:18 that night. Pritchard has been charged with harassment. (UPDATE: The charge was dismissed on Oct. 5.) Baldwin Health Center Employee Victimized …

Four Baldwin Wrestlers Heading to WPIAL Championships

Wil Ostermeyer is the Section 2 champion at 195 pounds.

Four Baldwin High School wrestlers used a home-mat advantage on Saturday to earn bids to the WPIAL's AAA individual championships, to be held from March 1-3 at Norwin High School. The Baldwin High grapplers represent Section 2 of AAA—the WPIAL's highest wrestling classification. Each of them—senior Said Hasanovic (120 pounds), senior Wil Ostermeyer (195), freshman DeVontae Evans (220) and senior Bobby Bush (285)—finished in the top five in their weight classes at the Section 2 individual championships hosted by Baldwin this past weekend, with the five best finishers at every weight advancing to the WPIAL championships. This was the second straight year that Baldwin wrestling hosted an individual section championships meet, and Ostermeyer …

Highlanders Grapplers Hanging Tough During Rebuilding Season

Baldwin sophomore D'Adrian Carter comes from behind for an entertaining 106-pound win.

Sometimes, life's not fair. But no need to tell the Highlanders that. Baldwin High School's varsity wrestling team faced a tall task on Friday night with a non-section match against 11-1 Hampton High School. Baldwin High, at 3-9, entered the match with 16 wrestlers on its roster, compared to 26 for Hampton, the No. 6-ranked team in the WPIAL's AAA, or largest, wrestling classification. To make matters worse, a bout of injuries and illnesses have hit the Highlanders hard recently, and that showed with forfeits by Baldwin in five weight categories. All the variables led to a 70-9 thumping by Hampton on Friday night, buoyed by 30 forfeit points and, to the Talbots' credit, pinfalls in six weight classes, as well as a 19-6 points win in …

Kurt Angle Signs Autographs, Mugs for Photos at Family Video in Whitehall

Over 200 fans turn out for an almost two-hour session. Angle says that he's mulling a return to WWE this fall.

Better late than never. Though he was tardy by about 25 minutes, Kurt Angle ended up giving more time than he promised at the Family Video in Whitehall Borough on Saturday. Angle, a former Olympic gold medalist and current professional wrestler, signed as many autographs and posed for as many pictures as fans wanted before finally leaving the Route 51 store after about two hours on Saturday. "Signing doesn't bother me," said Angle, who was there to promote his movie River of Darkness but was also in the Pittsburgh area for a Total Nonstop Action Wrestling show at The Rostraver Ice Garden that night at 7:30. "Meeting the fans is the best thing," he said. "They may think you're a mean guy, and sometimes, you hear some positive …

Not the coaching staff at all, guys. I interviewed Toki on the night of the section championships, and he briefly elaborated on each of the wrestlers that qualified for WPIALs (as well as one that narrowly missed). Toki said that Taylor wrestled very hard and earned the right to compete at WPIALs. He's very proud of him. Two wrestlers had to win lose-or-go-home matches, so I found it useful to …   more ›
