WPIAL Champs Smorey, Jackson Lead Baldwin into State Track Meet

Three Baldwin boys are headed to Shippensburg.

Two Baldwin High School juniors earned individual titles this past Friday at the WPIAL track & field championships, including Luke Smorey, perhaps Baldwin's best shot at a state title this coming weekend. Smorey, the 2013 WPIAL AAA boys javelin champ, will join two other Baldwin boys at the PIAA AAA championships, to held at Shippensburg University from May 24-25. Smorey hit 200 feet, 3 inches at the WPIAL meet, good for the No. 2 seed at the state championships. The No. 1 seed's mark is at 208-8. Fellow Baldwin junior Gary Jackson is the WPIAL's triple jump champ. Jackson leaped 45-1 at WPIALs and is seeded 14th at the state meet with that mark. The No. 1 seed is at 48-6. North Allegheny Too Much for Baldwin in WPIAL Playoffs, 56-33

NA moves on to the quarterfinals. Baldwin's season is done.

To add your own images from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. (Don't hesitate to include photos of the cheerleaders, coaches and fans.) North Allegheny High School's girls basketball team hadn't won a game in 10 days—and hadn't even played in one in eight—but the Tigers quickly shook off that rust against Baldwin High School in a WPIAL AAAA playoffs first-round win on Tuesday night. North Allegheny (20-3 overall) won the game's opening tip at neutral-site North Hills High School, got the ball to sophomore forward Meg Morningstar for the first two points and never trailed on its way to a 56-33 pounding of the lower-seeded Highlanders (11-12 overall). The 6-foot-1 Morningstar, who finished with 11 points, got her own …

Baldwin Dominates Latrobe in WPIAL Playoffs, 54-39

The Highlanders move on to face North Allegheny on Tuesday.

To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. (Don't hesitate to include photos of the cheerleaders, coaches and fans.) Baldwin High School didn't look like the lower seed. The Highlanders, forced to play Greater Latrobe High School in a WPIAL AAAA championships play-in game on Tuesday night, dominated the higher-seeded Wildcats at both ends of the floor to move on the tournament's first round with a 54-39 win. Latrobe (9-14 overall) saved its best for first by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in this neutral-site game at Penn-Trafford High School. But Baldwin's size, speed and superior shooting took over immediately, and the Highlanders (11-11 overall) finished the first quarter on a 19-6 run. "That was maybe…

Ed Helbig to Join PA T&F Coaches Association Hall of Fame

Baldwin's Ed Helbig is the only coach to be inducted this year.

The face of Baldwin High School track & field will soon be where it belongs, as a selection committee of the Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) has chosen Ed Helbig to be a member of PTFCA Hall of Fame's Class of 2013. The organization's hall of fame was established in 1995 to honor the elite individuals in Pennsylvania track & field history. A selection committee consisting of more than two-dozen coaches, officials and journalists collects and reviews information about individuals who have been nominated. Further research is conducted, and a new ballot is formed every summer, followed by voting in the fall and induction at the coming year's indoor state championship meet—Feb. 23 this year at Penn State University. …

We just need a football coach like this, but again the football team at Baldwin will be on another losing streak. Maybe next time we hire a coach we won't hire one that is owed favors.   more ›

PHOTOS: Baldwin H.S. Talent Show

Senior Daniel McTiernan earns first place.

Do you have images from this event, too? Add them to our media gallery by clicking on one of the green "Upload Photos and Videos" buttons above. Don't forget to add captions! Daniel McTiernan played piano and sang his way into first place at a Baldwin High School talent show on Tuesday night. The show was presented by the Baldwin High girls lacrosse program for the fourth straight year and brought over 200 people into the high school's auditorium to enjoy 17 acts, including McTiernan's humor-infused, crowd-energizing performance of a Justin Timberlake medley. Sha-quea Hatch and A'shanti Anderson's joint acting routine was hilarious enough to earn the duo a second-place finish, and the team of Steven Andrulonis and Darien Babinger captured …

Peter Wagner Jr. Is New Baldwin H.S. Head Football Coach

School board chooses Wagner by a 6-3 vote after rejecting Seton-La Salle Coach Greg Perry, 5-4.

Peter Wagner Jr. is the newest head coach of the Baldwin High School football program, the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board decided by a 6-3 vote on Wednesday night. Wagner, the dean of students at Baldwin High, has served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the high school's varsity team for the past two seasons. He has been an overall assistant in the program for the past four seasons. School board member Tracy Macek motioned for Wagner to be the new head coach after board member George L. Pry's motion to hire Greg Perry failed by a 5-4 vote. (Pry was acting on a recommendation made by B-W School District administration.) Baldwin Girls Draw Latrobe in WPIAL Basketball 'Pigtail' Game

The Highlanders (10-11) will play the Wildcats (9-13) at Penn-Trafford High School this Friday at 6:30 p.m.

(Bracket available in media gallery, below the picture.) The WPIAL officially invited Baldwin High School's varsity girls basketball team on Tuesday night to its 2013 AAAA championships tournament—sort of. Baldwin (10-11 overall), which finished its 2012-13 regular season with an upset of third-ranked AAAA team Bethel Park High School, 46-38, on Friday night, will have to play Greater Latrobe High School (9-13 overall) this Friday in a play-in, or "pigtail" game, in order to reach the first round of the tournament. The Highlanders' win over Bethel Park put them into a fourth-place tie in AAAA's Section 4 and clinched one of the WPIAL's very final postseason berths. And despite playing in the ultra-competitive Section 4, which also includes…

Baldwin Girls Stun Bethel, Make Playoffs

The Highlanders shine in a do-or-die game.

To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. (Don't hesitate to include photos of the pep band, dance team, coaches and fans.) A late 3-pointer from junior guard Nikki Corcoran may end up being the biggest shot of the season for Baldwin High School's girls basketball team, which stunned visiting Bethel Park High School, 46-38, in a WPIAL AAAA Section 4 game on Friday night. With Baldwin clinging to a 1-point lead with fewer than two minutes left in its regular season and needing a win to make the 2013 WPIAL playoffs, Corcoran calmy stepped back and drained a 3-ball from the left wing to push the Highlanders' lead to two possessions. Bethel Park, which came into the game with just two losses and is …
