Bottom Dollar Food opened in the Brownsville Plaza in south Baldwin Borough in January, occupying 24,141 square feet of once-vacant space and joining Dave's Terrace Bakery (3,271 square feet), Dr. Howard S. Pittle (3,184) and Sargo's Barber Shop (613) as plaza tenants. Kinesis Physical Therapy then opened in August and put 2,148 more square feet to good use. At some point, Boost Mobile also came along and leased 843 square feet of plaza space. Man, what was the name of that place? Haf-Mart? In any event, those stores are long gone, and with them has come vacancies along Curry Road. The place was a favorite of many along Streets Run Road.
The Chesapeake, a surf-and-turf restaurant that was a favorite of many residents in Baldwin-Whitehall and the surrounding area—especially with its seafood buffet special—has been closed for some time at its spot along Streets Run Road in Baldwin Borough. There is still activity at that property these days with a number of trailers and other work vehicles spotted there frequently, but there are no signs of life coming from the restaurant building, which has been boarded up for years. If The Chesapeake were to reopen, could it survive? Or would you like to see something else there? The 1.766-acres property—1965 Streets Run Rd.—is zoned for use as a restaurant, café and/or bar. The 28-year shopping center staple is closing.
UPDATE: Groceries are still on sale through Saturday. They're at 75-percent off of their regular prices now, but pickings are very slim. The store will auction off its equipment and appliances at the property itself on Tuesday morning at 9:30. (The Redbox machine has been removed.) With nearby competition, construction and changing clientele, the Curry Hollow Road Foodland will soon be out of business.
