Science Interest Not What it Seems in Baldwin-Whitehall?

Baldwin High School received praise for hosting a local science fair, but only one Baldwin-Whitehall student participated.

Baldwin High School received much praise for hosting a Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) fair on Saturday, so much so that PJAS officials are considering hosting an event there every year, Baldwin-Whitehall School District Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz said at a B-W School Board meeting on Wednesday night. Lutz estimated that the annual fair, which is open to students in grades 7-12 from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties, brought around 1,000 competing students to Baldwin High this year from around 85 school districts. But while approximately 60 Baldwin-Whitehall students volunteered to help to host the event, only one B-W student was among the 1,000 who actually participated. And that news alone put a damper on what was …

Do not discount the political intimidation factor in the science classroom. cc can't imagine why it might be important to acknowledge the contributions of Charles Darwin. If "there is no teaching going on, only a course facilitator" it wouldn't surprise me if the teacher were afraid of controversy in this political climate. Look at this nut who actually sits on the US House of Representatives …   more ›

Baldwin High to Keep Gym Class Requirements

School board members are concerned over students possibly taking study halls instead of physical education classes.

A motion to cut Baldwin High School's physical education requirements in half was shot down by the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board on Wednesday night by a 6-3 vote. B-W School District administration had argued that reducing the high school graduation requirement for physical education, or "gym class," from four semesters to two would give students the opportunity to take other classes that interest them or that could help their careers. They could elect to spend more time at Steel Center Area Vocational Technical School, for example. Also, students could still choose to take physical education classes as electives after fulfilling their two-semester gym requirement. But board members Nancy Sciulli DiNardo, Diana Kazour, Larry Pantuso, …

Schmotzer Gives End-of-Term Speech in PA House

The former Baldwin-Whitehall School Board member will soon be replaced in the state Legislature by Erin Molchany.

State Rep. Martin Michael Schmotzer gave a farewell speech in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Tuesday as his term representing the 22nd Legislative District comes to a close on Nov. 30. "I want to thank my dedicated staff back in Pittsburgh: former chief of staff Janine Palmer, current chief of staff Ryan Buzzelli, legislative assistants Ray Rosing and Melvin Pollard and former intern Elliot Rambo," said Schmotzer, a Democrat from Whitehall Borough whose district includes part of Whitehall and all of Baldwin Township. "Their efforts in constituent service made a difference in people's lives." "I want to thank Speaker (Sam) Smith, Majority Leader (Mike) Turzai and the Republican members for their service and spirited debates. "…

How Should Student Board Reps Earn Their Spots?

Also, Virginia Deasy will receive benefits, and more leftovers from Wednesday's school board meeting.

How Should Student Board Reps Earn Their Spots? Picking up on conversations from previous school board meetings, members of the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board, members of the audience and the board's student representatives each weighed in during a Wednesday night board meeting on what the process should be for selecting student board reps. Baldwin High School seniors Jaclyn Sirc and Joseph Doyle, junior Victoria Schmotzer and sophomore Jennifer Yanko are the district's current student board reps. Each of them was nominated for their positions by district administrators before being approved the board. Board member Kevin J. Fischer has said that he would prefer that students elect their own student board reps, while folks like state Rep. …

I don't understand why there are student reps at the board meeting to begin with. Student government or counsil should be the representation of the student body and they should meet with school administration as needed during the day while they are at school. This makes a lot more sense.   more ›

Extracurricular Activities Eligibility Discussed Again in Baldwin-Whitehall

And plenty more from Wednesday night's school board meeting.

Extracurricular Activities Eligibility Confusion over what makes students eligible to participate in extracurricular activities in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District should come to an end next week. At least, that's the plan. New Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz told the B-W School Board at a meeting on Wednesday night that he will submit a revised extracurricular participation policy for the board to vote on next week. That revised policy is expected to enforce a uniform standard for not only student-athletes in grades 7-12 but also for any student in those grades who wishes to participate in other activities, such as German Club, student newspaper, et al. During the 2011-12 school year, district officials attempted to enforce a …

bd, I can honestly say when I went to vote, I had the names of everyone on the school board and voted for everyone that was running against them. Our school Board is a joke and I know I will keep on voting against them till they are gone. I don't care if they are democrats or republicans, I just know we need to get rid of all of them.   more ›

'Pay to Play,' Promotions & Other Leftovers from a June 13 B-W School Board Mtg.

The board will consider charging students for extracurricular activities.

'Pay to Play' "I think the time has come" were the words of Baldwin-Whitehall School Board member Kevin J. Fischer on Wednesday night describing his motion for B-W School District administrators to develop a fee structure for student participation in extracurricular activities. Fischer did not motion for a fee structure to be implemented just yet, only to be developed and studied. Fellow board member Nancy Sciulli DiNardo seconded Fischer's motion "for conversation," and the motion passed, 9-0. This isn't the first time that B-W board members have discussed "pay to play." "I have mixed emotions for this (paying for activities)," board member Nancy Lee Crowder said in April, acknowledging that extracurricular activities are part of students…

Administrator Returns to Baldwin-Whitehall as Asst. Superintendent

Residents who remember Denise Sedlacek can welcome her back to the ranks. Also, a possible change in policy determining student board representatives is discussed.

Sedlacek Hired As one Baldwin-Whitehall School Board member put it, "Welcome back." Former B-W School District administrator Denise L. Sedlacek is returning as the district's assistant superintendent, as the school board voted to approve her hiring during a meeting on Wednesday night. Board member Nancy Lee Crowder, who made the welcoming statement, said that she was impressed with Sedlacek during the position's interviewing process. "Not only did she give answers, she gave solutions," Crowder said. Sedlacek previously served the district as its director of secondary curriculum before leaving in 2005. Since 2010, she has been the vice president of educational services at Pittsburgh area-based Pressley Ridge, which provides services to …

Brian, I wonder if the school board even listens to the students that represent the students at the meeting, if they are allowed to have a voice in the decisions, if they are heard on what needs changed at the school. I would personally love to see a limit on the number of years that a member could be on the board. Maybe 2 terms (8 years) at the most. Every year voted in 2 new members so that we …   more ›

Principal Change at Whitehall, Girls Soccer Coaches Out, Apparel Deal Rejected and More

Leftovers from an April 11 B-W School Board meeting.

Principal Change at Whitehall In keeping with soon-to-be-Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz's reorganization of Baldwin-Whitehall School District administration, the B-W School Board has moved Andrea Huffman from her position as the principal of Whitehall Elementary School to the position of director of curriculum for the entire district. The board approved Huffman's move during a Wednesday night meeting just before promoting Jennifer Marsteller from Whitehall Elementary vice principal to overall principal. The Huffman item passed, 8-0, with board member Diana Kazour being absent. Huffman will earn an annual salary of $92,501 in her new position, effective Thursday. The Marsteller item passed, 6-2, with board members Nancy Sciulli DiNardo …

The special 4/25 budget meeting is nice, but what’s not so nice is that the public will not be provided any information ahead of time. I specifically suggested to Mr. Schmotzer that the district provide a summary of key budget information on the website for public review prior to meeting so we can have questions ready, but the answer was no. He said he’s afraid any such information will be …   more ›

Baldwin High School Will Get Disposable Hall Passes

'Don't thank me. Thank the students. They made a good point.' – Superintendent Lawrence Korchnak

The students have won this round, as shared hall passes at Baldwin High School will soon be a thing of the past. Responding to students' concerns and research presented at an April 4 Baldwin-Whitehall School Board meeting, B-W School District Superintendent Dr. Lawrence C. Korchnak has authorized the use of disposable hall passes at Baldwin High. Korchnak made that announcement during Wednesday night's school board meeting, applauding Edward Lippl and Victoria Schmotzer, the district's senior and sophomore class representatives to the board, respectively, for speaking out about the school's previous practice of sharing hall passes between students even after they've been to school bathrooms. Korchnak thanked Schmotzer, especially, for her …

Thank you Mr.Edward Lippl and Ms. Victoria Schmotzer for you persistence in bringing us the facts. Victoria, I absolutely loved the scientific research you did for us. There can not be as many or all the same germs on a hall pass that is on a desk. (Well maybe a few from those students that don't wash their hands after using the bathroom.) As Edward stated at the meeting last week, you can not …   more ›

POLL: B-W Student Reps Revisit 'Disgusting' Hall Passes Issue

Sophomore Victoria Schmotzer uses research to prove her point.

Are hall passes at Baldwin High School sanitary? That was a concern voiced to Baldwin-Whitehall School District administration by Edward Lippl, the district's senior class representative to the B-W School Board, at the first board meeting of the 2011-12 school year. And with time winding down in his high school career, Lippl says that he's never gotten a sufficient response. So at Wednesday night's board meeting, Lippl brought backup, teaming with sophomore class rep Victoria Schmotzer to make a compelling case that hall passes at Baldwin High are, as Schmotzer puts it, "disgusting." Before speaking on the issue on Wednesday, Schmotzer and Lippl distributed handouts to board members and other attendants of the meeting that detail research …
