WATCH: Refugees Enjoy Thanksgiving at Whitehall Church

You can catch video from the event here.

The Whitehall Church along East Willock Road played host on Nov. 15 to an annual Thanksgiving celebration, and the event's organizers—South Hills Interfaith Ministries (SHIM)—captured video from the event. (See video above.) Originally organized in 2006 to celebrate both Thanksgiving and the announcement that SHIM was opening the Prospect Park Family Center in Whitehall Borough early the next year, the event has grown by leaps and bounds. It is great to see humanity to these refugees. But we also have millions of Americans that can't feed their families, pay their bills, have places to live because there isn't any jobs. We need to take care of American Citizens who though no fault of their own lost jobs and are homeless.   more ›

If you have a black belt in Black Friday shopping, listen up: Area big-box retailers are gearing up to dazzle bargain hunters even earlier this year—starting on Thanksgiving Day! These include deals on TVs, iPads, an electric scooter for $79 and a steam mop for $39. (There's a Wal-Mart Supercenter on Century Drive in West Mifflin Borough.) Not to be outdone, Target—you can find one on Lebanon Church Road in West Mifflin—and Best Buy—on Route 51 in West Mifflin (by Century III Mall)—are also planning all-out holiday shopping assaults. Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might otherwise be overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Baldwin-Whitehall. "Having a strong business district is better for your property values," said Stephanie M. Miller, the manager of projects & initiatives for Economic Development South. Local Grocery Store 'Locking Up Prices' to Combat Rising Food Costs

The prices will remain on hundreds of items through the holidays.

Giant Eagle is locking low prices through the holidays on hundreds of the items that customers purchase most. Even if costs go up, prices for these items will not change. "Increases in commodity costs for corn, wheat and soybeans continue to contribute to rising food prices," Giant Eagle Senior Vice President of Marketing Lisa Henriksen said in a news release, "and are compounded by additional factors such as fluctuating energy costs and drought. "Our Low Price Lock program will help Giant Eagle customers manage through this uncertainty during the holiday season and make it easier to plan gatherings and budget-friendly meals with prices on many popular everyday and seasonal items locked, or in some cases, reduced."
