UPDATES: Baldwin Council Opts to Keep Swimming Rates Mostly the Same

But cheaper, half-season and half-day passes will be available.

UPDATES and CORRECTIONS published below in italics (Thursday, April 18, at 10:05 a.m.). After toying with the idea of raising Baldwin Borough Swimming Pool rates by $5 per season pass for 2013, the Baldwin Council decided on Tuesday night to keep the pool's rates mostly the same as they were in 2012. The proposed rate increase was considered as a way to offset the pool's increasing expenses, but the council opted instead for the implementation of half-season passes that will become available in mid-July. Half-day passes will also be available at a cost of $3 per day. (A full-day pass costs $6.) The discounted price will be available at or after 4 p.m. but only on weekdays. The idea is to entice buyers with a prorated price. "When you get …

Baldwin Council to Consider Raising Swimming Pool Rates

Also on the table are discounted half-day and half-season passes.

Rates to use the Baldwin Borough Swimming Pool may rise in 2013 by $5 per season pass. At the same time, rates to use the pool for only a half-day or a half-season may fall. Borough Manager John Barrett told the Baldwin Council at its meeting on Tuesday night that he and borough pool Manager Chris Milius spoke recently and came up with those suggestions as ways to raise revenue for the pool, which officials say is losing money. "It wasn't built to make money off of," Councilman John Ferris said. "You're never going to make money off of that pool. A swimming pool is nothing but for the residents, for their convenience." Nevertheless, the council agreed informally that setting its sights on ways to offset the pool's increasing costs is a …

B-W Trivia: Which Country Club Is This?

We will reveal the answer on Monday.

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch has partnered with the Baldwin Historical Society to bring you a weekly trivia question that delves into our area's colorful past. Pat Lombardi and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures. Here is this week's question: Above is an old illustration. This recreational facility has a clubhouse, a swimming pool and a challenging golf course with a putting green and practice area. It also has a complete dining hall, where many events are celebrated. The swimming pool is large, with a wading pool and patio lounge area, and the clubhouse has dining facilities, a bar & grill, a pro shop and locker rooms with a summer snack shop. Which country club is this? …

New 'Baldwin Highlander Pass' on Sale Now

Passes will be good for admission to home sports events throughout the academic year.

In an effort to make admission to scholastic sports events at Baldwin High School easier and more affordable, the Baldwin-Whitehall School District will debut the "Baldwin Highlander Pass" this fall—a one-time-pay ticket that will allow access to events year-round. A Highlander Pass includes general admission for all home Baldwin High football games, soccer games, basketball games, swimming & diving meets, wrestling matches, lacrosse games and volleyball matches during a given school year (approximately 80 total events). The passes cannot be used, however, for WPIAL or PIAA playoffs games or for any team tournament events. Fall Sports Tryouts: Harrison Middle and Baldwin High Schools

Some activities start before classes do. Do you have your paperwork done?

Students interested in competing on sports teams at J.E. Harrison Middle and Baldwin High schools this coming fall season have some paperwork to complete. Although classes for the Baldwin-Whitehall School District's 2012-13 school year won't start until Tuesday, Aug. 28, some of the district's fall sports teams start activites as early as Aug. 13. But before athletes can begin any activities with district teams, they have to complete the required paperwork with their parents/guardians. That paperwork (also available in the media gallery above), in three packets, is available here: Packet 1 (11 pages) Packet 2 (one page) Packet 3 (one page) Included in those packets is paperwork for an authorized medical examiner to fill out upon completion…

Baldwin Council Asks, 'How Do We Make Community Day More Fun?'

A public meeting on Tuesday brought out various ideas for increasing participation and revenue.

Lack of attendance at its 2012 Community Day celebration led the Baldwin Borough Council to hold a public meeting on Tuesday night in order to generate ideas for drawing bigger crowds in future years. The council turned to the experts themselves—community members—to find out how to make the event better for everyone. And at the meeting, residents, council members and the Community Day committee brainstormed about several different solutions to the attendance problem, including adding new events like a carnival, a swimming tournament and/or performances by schoolchildren. "We all want it to be the best possible community function it can be," said Councilman Ed Moeller, who has been appointed to oversee the Community Day committee. "It's …
