Whitehall's John Gibson Helps USA to World Juniors Title Game

The star goalkeeper will go for the gold on Saturday morning against Sweden.

Whitehall Borough native John Gibson has surrendered just one goal in two playoffs games to help to lead Team USA to the gold-medal game of the Under-20 World Ice Hockey "Junior" Championships, which will be held on Saturday in Russia at 8 a.m. Eastern time. Gibson, formerly a student at Whitehall's St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin and Baldwin High schools, blanked the Czech Republic, 7-0, on Wednesday before defeating Canada, 5-1, in the semifinals on Thursday. The United States (4-2) will now face undefeated Sweden—3-2 winners over Russia in Thursday's other semifinal—for the gold. The game will be broadcast live on the NHL Network and re-broadcast at 8 p.m. It will also be live-streamed on NHL.com. The 6-foot-3, 222-pound Gibson …

Whitehall's Sally Haas Remembered as Business, Community Leader

Sally Haas, president of the Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber of Commerce, died unexpectedly on Thursday. Friends and colleagues praise her leadership.

Chip Holsworth, president of the Military Affairs Coalition of Western Pennsylvania, said that the local military advocacy group will have to search "far and wide" to find another leader like Sally Haas. Haas, the president of the Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber of Commerce and the co-chair of its military coalition, died unexpectedly on Thursday following surgery for an undisclosed condition. She was 58 and lived in Whitehall Borough. A fixture at coalition meetings and Moon Township military community events, Haas was tireless in her efforts to stave off a potential closure of the 911th Airlift Wing in Moon, Holsworth said. "She was our most active member," Holsworth said. "It's an incredible loss." Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, who …

WATCH: Highlanders Girls Prepare for Hoops Season

There'll be plenty of challenges for Baldwin, but the team seems ready to adapt.

"Speed and defense." If Head Coach Gavin Prosser has been trying to drive something into the brains of his players this preseason, he's certainly getting that done. When asked to identify what might be the calling card of the 2012-13 Baldwin High School girls varsity basketball team, Prosser mentioned "speed and defense," and that was after two of his players answered the same question with the same three words. The Baldwin High girls have added a promising 6-foot freshman center—Carly Lutz—to their young roster this season, but the team will mostly have to rely on smaller players, most of whom have less scoring pedigree than three of the squad's leaders from a season ago. And all of three of those ladies have graduated. Gone from the …

Funeral Home, Police Station to Accept Derkosh Trucks 'Indefinitely'

Maddox Derkosh of Whitehall Borough was buried on Friday.

William Slater II Funeral Service in Scott Township, the place where friends and family visited 2-year-old Maddox Derkosh on Thursday after his tragic death at the Pittsburgh Zoo, will continue for the immediate future to collect toy construction trucks to be donated to a children's Christmas charity in Maddox's memory. Original plans were to collect trucks at Slater Funeral Service through Thursday, but a representative of the funeral service said on Friday that the toys collection will continue "indefinitely." The same can be said for the Whitehall Police Department, which serves the Derkosh family's home municipality of Whitehall Borough. A representative of the police station said that trucks can continue to be dropped off at the …

I don't agree that Baldwin schools are on a downward spiral and compare our cirriculum to any of the "top-ranked" districts in Pittsburgh. I have worked in several districts and being a licensed counselor and educator find many appealing aspects of our district. All of the same problems you say are causing our district to downward spiral happen at every district - Fox Chapel and Upper St Clair …   more ›

Poll: Too Early to Start Back-to-School Shopping?

There are plenty of nearby places to buy supplies.

Local students won't start regular classes again until late August or early September, but back-to-school advertisements have been gracing TV sets and storefronts since early July. What does your little scholar need to get back into the learning groove this year? Are you already thinking about new clothes, notebooks, pencils, crayons and glue? On the hunt for a new backpack? Stocking up on Lunchables? Or are you still thinking about the summer? Is school just too far away? Take our poll! And if you're looking for places to buy gear in Baldwin-Whitehall, check out our directory. Of course, there are several great back-to-school shopping options just outside of our borders, as well. For example, there is a Kmart on Route 51 in Pleasant Hills…
