Whitehall's Gibson Helps 'Big Boys' to World Hockey Bronze Medal

The 19-year-old starred against NHL players like Alexander Ovechkin, Fyodor Tyutin and others.

Less than five months after an MVP and gold-medal-winning performance at the Under-20 World Ice Hockey "Junior" Championships, Whitehall Borough's John Gibson is back on the podium, this time with hockey's big boys at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF)'s world championship tournament. Gibson, still just a 19-year-old goalkeeper, moved up on the Team USA depth chart to face NHL stars like Alexander Ovechkin, Fyodor Tyutin and others in the elite hockey tournament held this year in Sweden and Finland. Gibson and the rest of the Americans earned a bronze medal in the tournament after besting Team Finland, 3-2 in a shootout, during Sunday's third-place game. Gibson made 36 total saves against Finland during 60 minutes of regulation…

It was a bronze medal for a team sport in a foreign tournament that few in the actual sport itself get too worked up about. JG was a 2nd-round pick & already has his 3-year entry level deal with Anaheim so he's doing just fine. Now that he's been promoted to the AHL level with Norfolk, we'll see how he shakes out, and if he can take that last step to the NHL.   more ›

Dynasty in Whitehall: St. Gabe's Wins 5th Straight Basketball Crown

The Gators overcome a fourth-quarter St. Alphonsus lead to earn another diocesan title.

Clinging to a one-possession lead with less than two minutes to play, St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin School forward Michaela Cavataio changed the basketball game with one hard fall to floor. And like all good falls, she took someone down with her. St. Alphonsus School's dominant 6-foot center Samantha Breen came barreling to the hoop late in Sunday's Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh varsity girls championship game at Oakland Catholic High School looking for a game-high 18 points and trying to narrow St. Gabriel's lead to just one point. But Michaela—already with four fouls on the day—stood in Samantha's way, and apparently, stood the right way, for when the whistle sounded and the ball sailed wide of the hoop, the foul was against…

The Rev. James Orr, pastor at Saint Albert's, reacted to the news. "Pope Benedict's abdication is one more sign of his personal humility," Rev. Orr said. "Behind the scenes, before he was Pope and after, he was known for the way he treated anyone with deference. "Power is not what is important to him but being a true follower of Jesus who 'came to serve, not to be served.' It is also a 'sign of …   more ›

The letter states that the burglary was able to be captured by security cameras, and through an investigation done by the Whitehall Police Department, a suspect was identified and arrested on Jan. 4.
