More than 30 libraries in Allegheny County, including the Whitehall Public Library, are inviting walkers ages 50 and older to take a Wise Walk, a free 10-week walking program held in partnership between the Allegheny County Library Association, AARP and UPMC for Life. Participants can set their own goals and walk at their own pace using a complimentary walking guide. Whitehall's Wise Walk program participants will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, along Corrigan Drive in South Park. Tools to help to make the walking program successful, including pedometers, healthy snacks and T-shirts, will be provided. Mike and Kim Mathias, who also own Sincerely Yogurt in South Park, hope to open the store in mid-May.
Sincerely Yogurt in South Park was a frequent stop for Mike and Kim Mathias, as they passed it every time they drove their four children to and from soccer practice. It wasn’t a tough decision to stop there for a treat, Kim said, because she and her husband loved the product as much as their children did. Now, the couple owns the South Park store—and soon, they’ll open a Sincerely Yogurt in Caste Village, too. “We were just itching to do something like this,” Kim said. “We’re both from Brentwood, so we’ve always come to these shops. We go to these restaurants and these stores all the time, so it’s neat to be part of this.” The couple, who now lives in Bethel Park, plans to open the store in mid-May, no later than Memorial Day. The store is…

Also, a discussion about a war memorial, and other leftovers from a June 20 borough meeting.
Residents Have Fire Pits Concerns The aroma of a backyard fire is a welcome smell to many folks in Whitehall Borough. But to some others, it's a nuisance. Because with the smell comes the smoke. That was the story from a discussion among Whitehall council members at a borough meeting on Wednesday night. Some council members admitted that they enjoy backyard fire pits in the borough, but some of those same members said that they understand why their neighbors might not. Councilman Philip Lahr said that residents tell him that they can't open their windows when a neighbor starts a fire. Borough Manager James E. Leventry said that whenever the weather gets nice every year, Whitehall's municipal offices' phones start to ring with calls from …

We will reveal the answer on Monday.
The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch has partnered with the Baldwin Historical Society to bring you a weekly trivia question that delves into our area's colorful past. Pat Lombardi and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures. Here is this week's question: This south Baldwin Borough farm (then Baldwin Township) was a working family farm from about 1840 until the mid-1900s. The farm property remained in the family until 2011. In the early 1900s, there was a stone quarry on the farm that produced Pennsylvania Bluestone, which was used to build houses in western Pennsylvania. In fact, the stone was used at the Oliver Miller Homestead in South Park. Many artifacts from this old Baldwin farm …
