Cool Springs Golf Reopens

The popular center closed suddenly in mid-March.

A drive by the Cool Springs Golf and Family Recreation Center on Hamilton Road in Bethel Park on Tuesday afternoon showed the center's miniature golf and upper driving range areas to be open for business. The lower range and batting cages were closed. The center closed suddenly in mid-March when Cool Springs senior management met with some employees to tell them they would close until—tentatively—mid-April. Bob Salera, the head professional and director of instruction at Cool Springs Golf School, said that that was the first time that Cool Springs had closed since he started working at the facility in 1997. Despite the reopening, Cool Springs' website—www.coolspringsgolfcenter.com—is out of service as of Wednesday morning.  --- Sign up for…

Popular Local Golf Center Suddenly Closes

The Bethel Park facility is tentatively scheduled to reopen in April.

As golf season is teeing off in the area, a popular golf center is closed—for now. Senior management of the Cool Springs Golf and Family Recreation Center on Hamilton Road in Bethel Park met with some of their employees on Monday to tell them that the center is closed until—tentatively—April 15, according to Bob Salera, the head professional and director of instruction at Cool Springs Golf School. Salera said that this is the first time that Cool Springs has closed since he started working at the facility in 1997. Cool Springs is a popular spot for its driving range, mini golf course and seasonal batting cages.  This article originally appeared on the UpperSt.Clair Patch.  --- Follow the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch on Facebook and Twitter. …

Athletic Assoc. Prez Concerned with Refugees' Use of Whitehall Fields

Gary and Melanie Remlinger spoke to the Whitehall Council about that issue on Wednesday night.

Refugees on Borough Fields Like it or not, Whitehall Borough has been forced to handle a large influx of refugee families to its community over the past several years. And a great deal of those people have taken residence in the apartments of the Wallace (Prospect) Park area, very near some borough fields that are also near and dear to the hearts of those running the Baldwin-Whitehall Athletic Association (BWAA)—a baseball and softball organization open to children from all communities. The president of the BWAA—Gary Remlinger—and his wife, Melanie, both of Varner Road, spoke to the Whitehall Council at its meeting on Wednesday night, expressing concern over how some refugees have been treating those parks—specifically, Prospect and …

Baldwin's Kelly Kovach '91 Enters WPIAL Hall of Fame

Three-sport star helped the Highlanders to win numerous WPIAL and state titles in the late '80s and early '90s.

To say that Baldwin High School alumna Kelly Kovach '91 Schoenly was a versatile athlete would be quite the understatement. Kovach, a sixth-year head softball coach at NCAA Division I Miami University (OH), starred for Baldwin in three sports during her time at the high school, winning numerous WPIAL and PIAA (state) titles and creating countless memories. Kovach added another memory on Thursday when WPIAL officials released the identities of its 2012 Hall of Fame Class, which included the former Highlander. The WPIAL's Hall of Fame biography of Kovach reads as follows: "Kovach had a 'golden' career at Baldwin. She was a four-year starter in softball and basketball and a three-year starter in volleyball. Pirates Chairman Saves Baldwin Softball's Travel Plans

Highlanders will be going to Myrtle Beach thanks to Bob Nutting.

When it appeared as though Baldwin High School's varsity softball team wouldn't be able to make it back home from a tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC, Pittsburgh Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting offered the girls a lift. Nutting plays the role of hero for Baldwin High, the WPIAL's defending AAAA Section 4 softball champion, as his generosity of a chartered bus ride allows the girls' plans to head south this month to continue when it appeared as if all might be lost. Baldwin had booked a flight to Myrtle Beach via US Airways leaving this Wednesday for a tournament there, but the cancellation of the team's return flight by Direct Air on Sunday was canceled when Direct suspended flight operations last week. That left Baldwin with too expensive of an…

Sound Off: What Can Be Done to Help the Baldwin High Softball Team?

Highlanders do not have a way back home from Myrtle Beach, SC.

Around $10,000 of fundraising could be lost by Baldwin High School's varsity softball team, WTAE has reported, as the girls have been left without transportation home from a tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC. The team—defending WPIAL AAAA Section 4 champion—still hopes to leave Pittsburgh via US Airways for a tournament in Myrtle Beach next week, but the cancellation of its flight home by Direct Air, which suspended flight operations on Tuesday, leaves Baldwin with only a week to find alternative travel for its return. Cheri Young, of the Baldwin Softball Boosters, tells WTAE that the girls could book a bus ride home but that that expense would run them an additional $5,000, an amount too difficult to raise in such a short time. If Baldwin …
