The National Weather Service is forecasting snow in the city's South Hills area for late on Wednesday night and on Thursday morning. There is also a chance of snow on Friday afternoon. All of the showers could bring a half-inch to 3 inches before the weekend. The temperatures will remain bitterly cold with lows in the single digits on Thursday and wind chill values below zero. You'd better bundle up this week, as bitterly cold temperatures are expected to move into Pittsburgh. There is also a chance of snow on Monday and Tuesday in the South Hills.
You'd better bundle up this week, as bitterly cold temperatures are expected to move into the Pittsburgh region, including Baldwin-Whitehall. Dennis Sims, a meteorologist at Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville Borough, told Patch this past week that he expected the bitter temperatures to arrive in the city's South Hills area on Tuesday. Sims said that the middle of the week would have low temperatures in the single digits and highs in the teens. That forecast was backed up by the National Weather Service. Meteorologists there are also forecasting 1 to 2 inches of snow on Monday with a slight chance of snow on Tuesday. A winter weather advisory is in effect through Wednesday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Allegheny County beginning Tuesday night and lasting into Wednesday morning. Snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected in our area, and the advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. on Tuesday until 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Accumulation of 1 to 2 inches of snow along with a light glaze from freezing rain is expected. The weather could cause hazardous travel conditions due to snow, sleet and ice-covered roads. Look out above!
Crews have put up yellow caution tape in various locations at Whitehall Borough's popular Caste Village on Thursday to warn pedestrians that they could be hit by ice and snow falling from the shopping center's slanted rooftop. Some spots are worse than others, as evidenced by the pictures seen in the media gallery above. Baldwin-Whitehall Patch Editor Bob Healy took those pictures shortly after 2 p.m. on Thursday. Weather forecasters issue a winter storm warning for the Pittsburgh area.
The National Weather Service in Moon Township has issued a winter storm warning for Allegheny County, effective from 5 a.m. on Wednesday through 6 a.m. on Thursday. Four to 8 inches of snow are expected to accumulate throughout Wednesday with heavy snow occurring mid-morning through the afternoon. Sleet and freezing rain are also expected. Visibility for motorists could be limited to a quarter-of-a-mile during heavy snows, according to the weather service. Hazardous travel conditions are expected. The National Weather Service has issued the advisory for Allegheny, Butler, Beaver and other Pittsburgh-area counties.
UPDATE (Thursday, Dec. 20, 11:32 p.m.): The National Weather Service forecasts 3 to 5 inches of snow in its updated winter weather advisory issued at 10:05 p.m. on Thursday. The weather service forecasts that rain will change to light snow late on Thursday and that the snow intensity will increase on Friday afternoon and night. ... The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for snow and blowing snow and warns that travel will be difficult because of slippery roads and reduced visibility.
