Observing Passover in Baldwin-Whitehall: What You Need to Know

Here is a list of resources, events and services in honor of the Jewish observance.

Passover Traditions As the story goes, during their flight from slavery, the Jews did not have enough time for their dough to rise, resulting in a flaky cracker that is eaten instead of bread for a full week during Passover. The diet changes go beyond bread, however, and depend on family tradition. As a general rule, just look for the "Kosher for Passover" label, which, thankfully, spreads to more products year after year. Prior to the observance, Jews clean their homes and get rid …

Baldwin Borough Expected to Add Police Officer

The decision does not come lightly, as things got heated on Tuesday night. More funds should be coming for the borough's road program, as well.

Chalk one up for the underdogs. Actually, chalk two up. John Conley played the role of swing voter at a special Baldwin Council meeting on Tuesday night, joining fellow Councilmen Bob Collet, Larry Brown and Ed Moeller in support of adding a full-time patrol officer to the Baldwin Borough Police Department roster. The foursome made up an unofficial majority during the meeting—which was scheduled as part of a continued discussion regarding the borough's 2013 budget—when council members couldn't agree on whether or not to add the police officer. Although the borough's 2013 budget hasn't been passed yet—it will have to be before 2012 is over—the trio of council President David Depretis, council Vice President Michael Stelmasczyk and council …

Last Chance: File Your Allegheny County Property Assessment Appeal, Attend a Town Hall

Life gets busy. Deadlines creep up on us all. Patch helps you to remember—before it's too late.

Welcome to Last Chance, a Patch series reminding you of deadlines you don't want to miss. This week's dates to remember?  1.) Today is the last day for property owners in Allegheny County to file formal appeals of their court-ordered property reassessments. Forms must be postmarked on or before today, April 2. They also may be taken to one of several collection points today. "I encourage all property owners to file a formal appeal by Monday's deadline to preserve their legal rights," County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said in a statement. "In fact, I am filing an appeal on my own property because I do not agree with its 2013 court-ordered reassessment value," he said. "Appeals may always be withdrawn, but once Monday's deadline passes, …
