Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua Dies at 88

Cardinal Bevilacqua, who was bishop of the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese from 1983-87, died in his sleep on Tuesday night.

The Associated Press is reporting that Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua died in his sleep on Tuesday night at the age of 88. The retired head of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia was an uncharged central figure in a child sex-abuse case that involves the alleged shuffling of predator priests to unwitting parishes, the AP reports. Bevilacqua died days after lawyers battled over his competence to testify at an upcoming trial at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary—in the Philadelphia suburb of Wynnewood—after battling dementia and an undisclosed form of cancer, an archdiocese spokeswoman told the AP. Bevilacqua had been the spiritual leader of the 1.5 million-member Archdiocese of Philadelphia from 1988 until his retirement in 2003. The Pittsburgh Post-…

Baldwin-Whitehall's Catholic Leaders React to New Missal

'The Lord be with you.' 'And with your spirit.'

As the old saying goes: The only constant is change. Used to reciting the same words everytime that you celebrate the Catholic Mass? Better pick up that missal, or missalette. You know what that is. It's that book next to your coat at the end of the pew—yes, the one with all of the songs in it. Starting this past Sunday, the Catholic missal, which contains the words used during Mass, has changed to include more Latin-based, and often archaic, language. For example, the response to "The Lord be with you" is no longer "And also with you." It is now "And with your spirit." Other changes include "One in being with the Father" to "Consubstantial with the Father" and "Lord, I am not worthy to receive you" to "Lord, I am not worthy that you …

Poll Workers: Voter Turnout Less than Desirable

Eight down, seven to go in Healy's visits to Baldwin-Whitehall polling places.

(Scroll through the slideshow above to see images from the first half of Election Day, and watch for Part 2 later.) Baldwin-Whitehall Patch Editor Bob Healy has visited eight of the Baldwin-Whitehall area's 15 polling places so far on Tuesday, and every poll worker has told him essentially the same thing: It's been better than the May 17 primaries, but the turnout still leaves much to be desired. Five people will earn four-year seats on the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board on Tuesday, and one other person will earn a two-year school board seat. Yet, despite sunny weather, area poll workers are reporting a low voter turnout so far. Also to be decided in Baldwin-Whitehall on Tuesday are three four-year terms on the Baldwin Borough Council, …

All Saints' Day: Albert, Elizabeth, Francis and Gabriel

Learn more about the namesake of some of Baldwin-Whitehall's churches.

By our count, there are churches at four locations in the Baldwin-Whitehall area named after specific saints: 1) Saint Albert the Great Catholic Parish, 2) Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church and School, 3) Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God and 4) St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church and School. In honor of All Saints' Day (Nov. 1), here are brief descriptions of the saints for whom those organizations are named: 1) St. Albert the Great is the patron saint of scientists. He was also known as Albertus Magnus and Albert of Cologne. According to Catholic Online, this Catholic saint "achieved fame for his comprehensive knowledge of and advocacy for the peaceful coexistence of science and religion." " ... He was…

Aluminum Stolen from Saint Albert's: Baldwin Borough Police Briefs (Aug. 15-21)

Motive and thief are unknown.

On Aug. 15 at approximately 3:25 p.m., a Baldwin Borough police officer came to Saint Albert the Great Catholic Parish in response to a theft report.  A maintenance worker for Saint Albert the Great met the officer and told him that an 8-foot piece of aluminum trim was taken from a parish garage on Schieck Street in north Baldwin. The worker said that he believed the aluminum may have been taken to be sold as scrap metal.  The worker and the officer reported no other missing pieces of aluminum. The incident is under investigation.

Baldwin-Whitehall had 15 polling places open to vote in primary races for school board, borough/township and county positions on Tuesday ... and Baldwin-Whitehall Patch Editor Bob Healy visited each one of them in about seven hours that day. Healy visited eight purple-and-white polling places before writing an article detailing Part I of that journey and heading out for the last seven. Part I stops included (in order) Baldwin High School, the Borough of Whitehall municipal complex, Option Independent Fire Company, the Wallace Building, Saint Albert the Great Catholic Parish, the Baldwin Borough municipal complex, W.R.
