Pittsburgh Area Catholic Leaders Hail Selection of Pope Francis

Pittsburgh area Catholic leaders reacted to the election of Pope Francis and were especially fixated on his 'New World' origins and the meaning behind the name he chose. Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina was selected as the new pope Wednesday.

Pittsburgh area Catholic leaders reacted to the election of Pope Francis and were especially fixated on his 'New World' origins and the meaning behind the name he chose. Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina was selected the new pope Wednesday and greeted the thousands who gathered at the Vatican. Closer to home, Catholic leaders here said they are excited about the selection. "Like most Catholics I was filled with great excitement when the white smoke emerged from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. And although I didn't know all that much about Cardinal Bergoglio, his appearance and remarks from the balcony were both quite impressive. Further, the fact that he is a member of the Jesuit religious order founded by Saint Ignatius, a saint to whom I'm…

Vote now to have 'Jimmy and Monty' appear in north Baldwin.

Saint Albert the Great Catholic Parish could be the site of the next special broadcast of the "Jimmy and Monty In The Morning" show on Y108. Pope Benedict XVI to Resign for Health Reasons

The Vatican announces that he will step down on Feb. 28.

Pope Benedict XVI announced on Monday that he will resign effective Feb. 28, The Associated Press is reporting. According to The AP, the 85-year-old pontiff announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals on Monday morning, citing his "advanced age and diminishing strength." The pope, leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics worldwide, including those at Baldwin Borough's Saint Albert the Great and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary churches and Whitehall Borough's St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church and Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God campus, emphasized that the duties require "both strength of mind and body." The Rev. James Orr, pastor at Saint Albert's, reacted to the news. "Pope Benedict's …

The Rev. James Orr, pastor at Saint Albert's, reacted to the news. "Pope Benedict's abdication is one more sign of his personal humility," Rev. Orr said. "Behind the scenes, before he was Pope and after, he was known for the way he treated anyone with deference. "Power is not what is important to him but being a true follower of Jesus who 'came to serve, not to be served.' It is also a 'sign of …   more ›

April's Greatest Person: Connor Doran

Talented junior's star shines brightly year-round.

Sure, part of the reason that no one could take their eyes off of Connor Doran during Baldwin High School's production of "Curtains" last month was because he was playing the lead role. And yes, it's hard not to notice Doran while he's performing with the school's Baldwinaires choir since he's the only one behind the piano. But Connor is showcased these ways for a reason: He's mighty talented. Doran, a junior at Baldwin, hasn't wasted a moment of his high school years. And for those who have seen his impressive performances, they haven't wasted their time, either. The 16-year-old resident of south Baldwin Borough's Olympic Drive plays chromatic percussion (xylophone, et al.) for the Baldwin High marching band every fall, spends his winters…

Quote from Kris Tranter added.: "He's quite exceptional," Tranter said, "and I would have to say 'rare.' This is my 13th year teaching, and I've never seen a student with that kind of talent before—well-rounded talent, too. He's a great singer. He's a great actor. When you talk about his piano-playing abilities, you can't even explain it. He is just that good."   more ›
