Baldwin and Whitehall residents participating will be asked to observe a moment of silence at the starting line.

People at May 5's Pittsburgh Marathon will be able to purchase blue "Boston Strong" wristbands for whatever dollar amount that they choose to donate to One Fund Boston. The fund was established to help the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. The wristbands will also be available for purchase at the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon and at the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. "No matter where we start and finish our race, we are one running community," said Patrice Matamoros, race director of the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. Ed Helbig to Join PA T&F Coaches Association Hall of Fame

Baldwin's Ed Helbig is the only coach to be inducted this year.

The face of Baldwin High School track & field will soon be where it belongs, as a selection committee of the Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) has chosen Ed Helbig to be a member of PTFCA Hall of Fame's Class of 2013. The organization's hall of fame was established in 1995 to honor the elite individuals in Pennsylvania track & field history. A selection committee consisting of more than two-dozen coaches, officials and journalists collects and reviews information about individuals who have been nominated. Further research is conducted, and a new ballot is formed every summer, followed by voting in the fall and induction at the coming year's indoor state championship meet—Feb. 23 this year at Penn State University. …

MUST-SEE PHOTOS: A Boy, a Baseball and a Branch (and Birds)

A freak accident left a Whitehall boy with a log coming out of his leg.

What were the odds? Two boys playing ball in a backyard in May turned into a painful nightmare for 9-year-old Adam Feth of Whitehall Borough. But thanks to some new technology, the nightmare didn't last long. Adam and a friend were simply playing at the Feths' place in the 4300 block of Highgrove Road when their game spilled over into a wooded area at the end of the backyard. The pair's baseball had rolled into the woods, and Adam went after it. What happened next could have happened to anyone. Adam's shoe caught a twig, a stone, anything—something large enough to cause him to trip—before he landed on the ground with, basically, a log stuck in the meat of his shin. The tree branch, which Adam's mother, Debbie, said was about 6-feet long, …

SCHEDULE/PREVIEW: Brentwood Boro July 3-4 Celebration

Tiny Brentwood has a grand tradition.

Tiny Brentwood Borough will see a population boom for at least two days next week, as guests and residents from in and around Pittsburgh's South Hills area will descend on the community of about 9,000 residents for an Independence Day celebration. The festivities—put together annually by Brentwood community leaders and volunteers—have grown into a can't-miss attraction for many Pittsburghers, and John Frombach, chair of the Brentwood 4th of July Committee, says that 2012 will be no different. Frombach says that the borough's Fourth of July parade alone (along Brownsville Road) draws more than 40,000 spectators each year from all over the South Hills. Here is this year's schedule: TUESDAY, JULY 3 6-8 p.m.: BRENTWOOD STREET FAIR (Along …

Letters to the Editor

Chelsa Wagner on Port Authority 'Failures'

The new county controller comes down hard on public transit.

"As the county's top fiscal officer, Controller Chelsa Wagner leads the fight against inefficient and inequitable spending, working to root out fraud, waste and abuse in county government. Chelsa ensures the controller's office is a direct, effective advocate for Allegheny County, this region, and most importantly, the taxpayers." Those are the words used on the Allegheny County Controller's website to describe the job, or jobs, assigned to Wagner during her time in that office. And for Wagner, the former state representative who once ran an office at Whitehall Borough's Caste Village, she's not wasting any time in this her first term as Controller. Wagner publicly called out Port Authority of Allegheny County leaders with a May 15 letter …
