Oh, Deer! What Plants, Shrubs and Trees They Won't Eat

The list is longer than you think.

Diana Knapp spends many hours per day at Hahn Nursery & Garden Shop in Ross Township talking about deer. Specifically, Knapp counsels customers on how to prevent their flowerbeds, shrubs and trees from becoming buffets for white-tailed visitors. The list of plants resistant to deer might be longer than you think—see PDF file in this article's media gallery—and there are few basic rules of thumb. "Most of the grasses they never bother," Knapp said. "And there are grasses for sun, grasses for shade. A lot of times, things that have a fuzzy texture, or a really strong odor they will avoid.” For the plants—which deer do like—Knapp suggests a three-pronged attack. This is true, Paula. I have a huge herd that meanders through my fenced in yard twice each day, and the numerous piles of feces they leave behind is not only unsanitary, but can attract rats.   more ›

Copper Theft, DUI Reported by Baldwin Boro Police

Notes from Aug. 8-12.

Copper Theft A Baldwin Borough police officer went to a house in the 3500 block of Churchview Avenue at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday for a report of a burglary. A representative of the house's owner told the officer upon arrival that the house was broken into sometime over the past two days. A side door leading to the house's kitchen was kicked in, according to a police report, and approximately 30 feet of copper pipe was taken from the laundry room and downstairs bathroom. The incident is under investigation. DUI Baldwin Borough police officers went to a home in the 3400 block of Hazelhurst Avenue at around 12:32 a.m. on Saturday for a report of an underage drinking party. Dozens of cases of the West Nile Virus have been found in mosquitoes around western Pennsylvania over the past two months.

Dozens of cases of the West Nile Virus have been found in mosquitoes around western Pennsylvania over the past two months, but no humans have been infected yet. Allegheny, Washington, Beaver and Fayette counties are currently considered "high risk" areas in Pennsylvania, according to state regulators. A sample of mosquitoes in Baldwin Borough tested postive on July 26. Other areas that have been impacted are the City of Pittsburgh, with dozens of reports, and Wilkinsburg Borough, with nine cases since July 3. Other areas that have had sporadic positive tests are Bridgeville Borough, Collier Township, Emsworth Borough, Sewickley Borough and Leetsdale Borough (July 19), Ross Township (July 17), Peters Township (July 25 and 26) and Bethel …

Unsolved Cases: Jamie Peterson

The mother of two from Ross Township vanished this past September.

To an outsider, Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, might have seemed like an average day in Jamie Nichole Peterson's life. Peterson's children, a 9-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, left for school that morning from their Ross Township home in the area of North Fremont Avenue, near Bellevue Borough. Jamie, 30, went to buy groceries at the Giant Eagle at 4110 Brighton Rd., and, according to some reports, also a Home Depot. Then, she returned home. The last person to see Peterson was an ex-boyfriend, who came over early that afternoon to pick up clothing that he had left at her place. Jamie had broken off their five-year relationship three weeks earlier, according to her father, Jim Peterson, a former state constable from Ross. Witnesses said that …
