Meantime, a suspect involved in the February incident remains in jail.

The suspect who allegedly shut a door on Baldwin Borough police officers, leading to one officer's rifle going off and firing two shots into a police sergeant's back, remains in the Allegheny County Jail after waiving his preliminary hearing last week, according to an online docket sheet. Meantime, Baldwin Mayor Alexander R. Bennett Jr. is reviewing an internal investigation of the incident that included a firearms review, interviews with police officers and an Allegheny County police investigation, to determine if any action should be taken on his part, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report. Ok maybe it has not happened in a unit you served in and it has not happened in my dept BUT I was referring to the military in general. I do not have time to research but I am sure there are incidents of "accidents" involving firearms. Yes muzzle discipline is crucial and the finger should be off trigger until ready to fire but again during "tense, uncertain rapidly evolving situations" these "…   more ›

Baldwin Manager Urges Duquesne Light to Pursue LED Technology

Also, the mayor is asked about Sgt. Miller, and news regarding a Kurt Hinish fundraiser.

How Are Those Lights Coming? Baldwin Borough Manager John Barrett said at Tuesday night's Baldwin Council meeting that he continues to urge Duquesne Light officials to investigate the possibility of installing LED lights in Baldwin. However, Duquesne Light, which owns the borough's streetlights, still does not have an LED lighting option ready for Baldwin in order to help the borough to save on energy costs. In 2012, Baldwin officials gave Duquesne Light the go-ahead to eliminate more than 27 percent of the borough's streetlights (all non-LED) in order to save money. Barrett said that he wrote a letter to Duquesne Light saying, essentially, "In our opinion, nothing's been done." Baldwin Mayor Alexander R. Bennett Jr. suggested that perhaps…

Blood Drive in Honor of Sgt. Miller Set for Tuesday

Multiple groups have organized the event.

Multiple groups have organized a blood drive in honor of Sgt. Ralph Miller, the Baldwin Borough police officer injured on Feb. 10 in a friendly fire incident in central Baldwin. The drive will be held at the Baldwin Borough Municipal Complex along Churchview Avenue in north Baldwin from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, with donations being taken by the Central Blood Bank. Miller is well known around Baldwin Borough and its surrounding area as a child car seat inspector. Miller does not charge for that work and has been known to inspect seats for parents even on days that he is not scheduled to work. A 14-year police veteran, Miller was promoted to the rank of sergeant in February 2011. Before becoming a police officer, Miller was a truck driver …

Baldwin Council Meets with Police Chief to Discuss Personnel

Public Safety Chair Larry Brown says that the council will not intervene with Chief Scott's investigation of a Sunday morning shooting. Scott reveals more details of the incident.

The start of Tuesday night's Baldwin Borough Council meeting was delayed by about 10 minutes to allow the Baldwin Council to finish another meeting with borough police Chief Michael Scott. The chief's private meeting with Baldwin's elected officials was to discuss personnel, borough Manager John Barrett said. The meeting comes less than three days after a Sunday morning shooting at a home on Elmwood Drive in the central part of the borough left one Baldwin police officer—Sgt. Ralph Miller—with gunshot wounds in his hip/lower back area. Miller was shot twice by a fellow Baldwin officer, Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said at news conference on Sunday following the incident. A third Baldwin officer, also responding to…

The shooting occurred at around 4 a.m. on Sunday at a home on Elmwood Drive.

A Baldwin Borough police sergeant remains in stable condition at a Pittsburgh-area hospital, where he is being treated for gunshot wounds in his hip/lower back area, according to Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt. Rabies Pellets Being Placed Around Baldwin Boro

And other notes from an Aug. 21 council meeting, including a Vernon landslide update.

Health Department Hoping to Eradicate Raccoon Rabies Don't be surprised to see representatives of the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) around Baldwin Borough this week. From Aug. 20-24, health department workers will place fish oil-scented pellets containing a vaccination for rabies at select spots in the borough, Baldwin police Chief Michael Scott said during Tuesday night's Baldwin Council meeting. The effort is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is part of a multi-state program to eradicate raccoon rabies. Four rabid raccoons have been reported in Allegheny County so far in 2012, according to the ACHD website, compared to 23 in 2002, the program's first year. Worried about coming across some of the bait? The …
