Baldwin Grad Part of '1776' Theater Cast

The musical, opening soon, will be the biggest production in Pittsburgh Public Theater history.

Justin Fortunato didn't exactly have a rough start to his career, at least in high school. The 2007 Baldwin High graduate was a rare Gene Kelly Award winner as a freshman and earned Kelly nominations three other times at Baldwin for excellence in local scholastic theater. Now a pro, Fortunato will appear later this month on the O'Reilly Theater stage for a month-long running of the Pittsburgh Public Theater's production of '1776.' The Tony Award-winning musical—Fortunato calls it "more of a play with music"—presents the heroes of the American Revolution in rousing songs and dances, comic encounters and impassioned politics. Directed by Ted Pappas, the show will run at the O'Reilly from Jan. 24 to Feb. 24. Click here for times and to buy …

Join us in welcoming Brian Duncan, who will help with your marketing and advertising needs!

Baldwin-Whitehall Patch friends, we've added a new member to our Patch family! Yes, you will be seeing a new face around town: Brian Duncan, our new advertising manager. Please allow me to introduce him to you—at least online for now. Here's a bit more about Brian in his own words: Community journalism and neighborhood togetherness have played a strong role in my life since I was a young boy.  It all started when I delivered the "Community News" weekly publication when I was 12. My dad was also always hyper-aware of everything going on around town, so I learned a lot about community awareness and togetherness from him.  Back in those days, it was all word of mouth, and maybe, the weekly newspaper.  But now, we have Patch!    I obtained my …

A True 'Warrior'

Partially blind and completely busy, Nick Gardner, 17, is making the most out of high school.

Like most kids at Baldwin High School, Nick Gardner is in the midst of navigating adolescence. But unlike most kids, Gardner must navigate—literally—with less than half of his sight. No sweat. He'll just work twice as hard. Gardner doesn't seem to mind. In fact, staying busy is his forte. The 17-year-old junior from Baldwin Township, who has chorioretinal detachment that has blinded him in his right eye since birth and has left him with about half of his left eyesight, is more than a student. He's an actor, an athlete, and for the past few summers, has been preparing to be a working man. "I'm one of the busiest blind people ever," he says proudly. "I don't go home after school very much." Including this year, Gardner has performed in the …

VIDEO: New Coach Gavin Prosser Previews Highlanders Girls Hoops

Prosser, a 2003 Baldwin High School alum, is in his first season as a high school coach.

The Baldwin High School varsity girls basketball team has compiled an average record of 18-7 over the past four seasons, including three consecutive WPIAL playoffs appearances, a WPIAL championship game berth and two trips to the PIAA playoffs. But the team's newest head coach, Baldwin High alum Gavin Prosser '03, has a career head coaching record of 0-0. As with the boys team at Baldwin, the Highlanders girls will play under a new head coach during the 2011-12 season, a coach that is leading a varsity basketball team for the first time. Though, Prosser is not without some pedigree. He was an all-WPIAL point guard as a player for the Highlanders, scoring over 1,200 career points and leaving the school as its second all-time leading male …

Baldwin Athletics Director Responds to Hiring of New Girls Basketball Coach

"Gavin bleeds purple and white." — Vince Sortino

Baldwin-Whitehall School District Athletics Director Vince Sortino had glowing words to say about the recent hiring of Gavin Prosser as Baldwin High School's head varsity girls basketball coach. Prosser inherits the program from Dan Thayer, who was removed as head coach by the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board in June without a true public explanation. "Gavin is a graduate of Baldwin High School, was a great player at Baldwin and continued with a great playing career in college," Sortino said on Tuesday in reference to Prosser's all-WPIAL selection at Baldwin and honorable mention All-America honor at Point Park University. "As an assistant coach at Point Park for the men's team, Head Coach Bob Rager raved about his abilities as an assistant …

New BHS Girls Basketball Coach Ready to Meet Challenge

Baldwin alum Gavin Prosser's road in basketball brings him back home as the coach of the Lady Highlanders.

The Baldwin High School varsity girls basketball team has compiled an average record of 18-7 in the past four seasons, including three consecutive WPIAL playoffs appearances, a WPIAL championship game berth and two state playoffs trips. It is a program on the rise, moving in the direction of being a championship team. The man who will lead the team for the first time during the 2011-12 season is undertaking that task in his first head coaching job, but Gavin Prosser is eager to face the challenge at his alma mater. "I love everything about Baldwin," Prosser said. "I thought it was a great opportunity, and I know they have a lot of talent there. Being back at Baldwin was something that I've always wanted to do, and as soon as I heard the …

UPDATE: Public, Officials Express Dissatisfaction Over Baldwin Basketball Coaching Situation

"There was a gentleman who had been offered the job (as head boys varsity coach), accepted the job, wanted the job, said this was great ... and he lied to us." - Board member Martin Michael Schmotzer

UPDATE below. Michael Greco, of 105 Flora Road in Baldwin Borough, used public comments time during Wednesday night's Baldwin-Whitehall School Board meeting to say that Baldwin High School's basketball players are being put at a competitive disadvantage by not having coaches during this preseason time. "The timing of it (opening Baldwin High's basketball coaching positions on June 8) and the length of the process to fill the position(s), in my opinion, is doing great harm to a very hard-working group of kids. "They play in arguably the toughest (WPIAL) AAAA section out there (Section 4), and they're losing very valuable time over the summer as we go through this process to fill the position(s)—time they can't get back." Greco wanted to …

The boys' coaching search is a joke. Who does the board think that they are going to bring in? Especially, when you have to play Lebo, USC, and now Char Valley all twice. They had a guy in there already that worked as hard and cared just as much as the coaches at those schools, and with far less talent. I dont get the opening up of the boys' job. Did Kyle scream too loud? Or work the kids too …   more ›

Baldwin High Grad, Photographer Making His Mark in Showbiz

Jordan Beckham ’01 lists Wiz Khalifa, other entertainers among his clients.

For Jordan Beckham, it all kind of started with a KISS-FM radio contest. Fitting, since perhaps his most famous client is always on KISS-FM. Beckham, a 2001 Baldwin High School graduate and renowned Pittsburgh photographer, acquired his first digital camera – a Nikon D50 – after his mother won a KISS radio contest for him, and since then, Beckham has been through an arsenal of lenses to support his two companies – Jordan Beckham Photography and ANTUKS. Perhaps you’ve heard of one of his clients – Wiz Khalifa, the native Pittsburgher whose song “Black and Yellow” has peaked at No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. You can find ANTUKS’ video of Wiz Khalifa’s song “The Kid Frankie” on the ANTUKS website. (Warning: “The Kid Frankie” video and …
