Whitehall Parents Sue Pittsburgh Zoo

Their 2-year-old boy, Maddox Derkosh, fell into a wild African painted dogs exhibit last year and was killed.

UPDATE: The family is asking for damages in excess of $50,000 on each of six counts, citing wrongful death, negligence and negligent infliction of emotional distress, among other claims, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The parents of the 2-year-old boy named Maddox, who was killed after falling into a wild African painted dogs exhibit last fall, have filed a lawsuit against the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium for unspecified damages, according to WPXI. The lawsuit filed on behalf of Jason and Elizabeth Derkosh of Whitehall Borough claims that zoo officials had ample warning that parents routinely lift their children onto a rail overlooking the exhibit so that the children can see the dogs better, according to the report. The zoo did have signs not to place your child on the railing which the mother ignored the warnings and did what she wanted to do. She didn't have a hand on her child when he fell. People who buy memberships to the zoo and others who pay to go into the zoo are now without the painted dogs because of her stupidity. Should we all get together and file a class action suit against her for having the …   more ›

Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered to 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say that it would save lives. Others say that it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving—at least for some people—if the National Transporation Safety Board (NTSB) has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended that states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. About 10,000 deaths per year are related to drunken driving. The lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives per year, according to the NTSB. We asked Baldwin-Whitehall folks on Facebook what they thought of the recommendation, and five people supported it. No opposition was voiced. However, officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." They said that the average woman could reach the 0.05-percent limit by having one drink. …

Good idea but it doesn't go far enough. If the legislature wants to socially engineer our behavior it must set an example. Fines and penalties must be doubled for ploiticians, judges and law enforcement officials who are found guilty of DUI using the same principle as speeding in a work zone. What say you public officials?sislturen the interest of safety I feel that the law should be expanded to …   more ›

Endangered Birds Delay Water Tank Project

Part of the $5-million project comes to a halt while the nesting period is completed.

The Pennsylvania American Water Company's plans to rehabilitate the Green Tree water tank, which services Whitehall Borough, Baldwin Borough and Baldwin Township, have been put on hold after crews found a nest of Peregrine falcons. The project will remain on hold until the nesting period is completed to avoid disturbing the falcons, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The estimated restart date is in July. "We're proud to be able to help in restoring this endangered population," water company spokesperson Josephine Posti told Patch. The project will include inspecting, sandblasting and repainting the 2.5-million-gallon-capacity elevated tank in Green Tree Borough to extend its service life and to protect water quality. No service …

Allegheny County Adds its First 2 Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles

County officials unveiled the first two compressed natural gas trucks put into service for their public works department at an Earth Day press conference on Monday.

To most Baldwin Borough, Whitehall Borough and Baldwin Township residents, the new, white Allegheny County trucks that they might pass on the roadways won't appear to be anything extraordinary. But they are a first step in the county going green with a cleaner-burning fuel for fleet vehicles. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and other officials unveiled the county's first two compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles at a press conference on Monday. Each vehicle cost $35,285. The Silverado 2500HD, four-wheel drive, extended cab pickup trucks contain specially designed 6.0-litre Vortec V8 engines and have a gross vehicle weight of 9,500 pounds. The trucks are factory-built with hardened valves and seals, which are critical for CNG …

Stink Bugs Season Is Returning

Can they be stopped?

The return of warm weather means a lot of great things—swimming, cookouts, parades, baseball. But it also means the return of one of the Mid-Atlantic states' most ubiquitous pests—the Halyomorpha halys, or brown marmorated stink bug. Somehow accidentally introduced in the United States during the late 20th century (or thereabouts), stink bugs are now so prevalent that exterminating them—or at least trying to do so—has become quite the industry. A "stink bugs" search on Amazon.com shows a number of traps and sprays for sale—and even a book—that are designed to get rid of the exotic insects. But how can they be prevented from first coming into our homes, where they buzz and fly and create a foul odor when crushed? And, lest we forget, they'…

Isn't using a trap outside like shoveling in a snowstorm...if I use a trap and my neighbor doesn't, well it seems like a huge waste of money. Why can't somebody figure out how to kill the eggs before they hatch. I need these bugs to be gone from my life!!!   more ›

Charges Filed Against Man in Baldwin Police Shooting

Bryan Lijewski faces one felony charge and nine misdemeanors.

Baldwin Borough police have charged Bryan Robert Lijewski, 30, with one felony and nine misdemeanors stemming from their appearance at Lijewski's home on Elmwood Drive in central Baldwin on Feb. 10, according to an online docket sheet. Police went to Lijewski's home at 5147 Elmwood at around 4 a.m. that day in response to a domestic disturbance involving a female resident who told police that her boyfriend, who also lives at the home, was holding a gun and was threatening to harm himself, Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said at a news conference later that day. Baldwin Council Meets with Police Chief to Discuss Personnel

Public Safety Chair Larry Brown says that the council will not intervene with Chief Scott's investigation of a Sunday morning shooting. Scott reveals more details of the incident.

The start of Tuesday night's Baldwin Borough Council meeting was delayed by about 10 minutes to allow the Baldwin Council to finish another meeting with borough police Chief Michael Scott. The chief's private meeting with Baldwin's elected officials was to discuss personnel, borough Manager John Barrett said. The meeting comes less than three days after a Sunday morning shooting at a home on Elmwood Drive in the central part of the borough left one Baldwin police officer—Sgt. Ralph Miller—with gunshot wounds in his hip/lower back area. Miller was shot twice by a fellow Baldwin officer, Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said at news conference on Sunday following the incident. A third Baldwin officer, also responding to…

In Memory: Ralph Leng

Baldwin-Whitehall's Leng was a 1955 NIT champion.

There was a time when the National Invitation Tournament was the best college basketball event in the country and its champion was considered the best scholastic team in the land. That was the case in 1955 when the Duquesne University Dukes won the NIT behind the superb play of Sihugo Green, a future No. 1 NBA draft choice. Green's practice partner that year?: Baldwin Borough's Ralph Leng, who died on Sunday after a yearlong battle with leukemia, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Leng, who was 77, graduated from the now-defunct St. Wendelin High School in Pittsburgh before earning his piece of the national title by sharpening the play of Green and the rest of Duquesne's starting lineup. "The coaches looked at my dad and figured he was …
