WATCH: Baldwin H.S. Readies to Apply 'Hairspray'

This April, the students defend their Gene Kelly Award for Best Musical.

Baldwin High School's renowned theater program got what some might call overdue acclaim last year when it walked away from the 22nd Annual Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater with a Kelly Award for Best Musical. Baldwin's "Show People" delighted audiences with its 2012 production of "Curtains"—a parody of 1950s "whodunnit" mystery theater—and aim to do just the same in 2013 with "Hairspray," the musical widely popularized by the 2007 movie of the same title starring John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Christopher Walken and many other household names. The story centers around Tracy Turnblad, a large girl with big hair and a kind heart. Tracy has only one passion—to dance. She wins a spot on a local TV dance program—"…

Science Interest Not What it Seems in Baldwin-Whitehall?

Baldwin High School received praise for hosting a local science fair, but only one Baldwin-Whitehall student participated.

Baldwin High School received much praise for hosting a Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) fair on Saturday, so much so that PJAS officials are considering hosting an event there every year, Baldwin-Whitehall School District Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz said at a B-W School Board meeting on Wednesday night. Lutz estimated that the annual fair, which is open to students in grades 7-12 from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties, brought around 1,000 competing students to Baldwin High this year from around 85 school districts. But while approximately 60 Baldwin-Whitehall students volunteered to help to host the event, only one B-W student was among the 1,000 who actually participated. And that news alone put a damper on what was …

Do not discount the political intimidation factor in the science classroom. cc can't imagine why it might be important to acknowledge the contributions of Charles Darwin. If "there is no teaching going on, only a course facilitator" it wouldn't surprise me if the teacher were afraid of controversy in this political climate. Look at this nut who actually sits on the US House of Representatives …   more ›

Are the PTA/PTO 'Booster Groups'?

The B-W School Board can't agree on revisions to a school facilities use policy.

Are Baldwin-Whitehall's PTA and PTO "booster groups"? The question of whether or not those parent-teacher groups qualify as such has contributed to a disagreement among B-W School Board members regarding how much certain groups should be charged to use district facilities and services. School board member Nancy Lee Crowder, with substantial PTA/PTO experience, doesn't see those parent-teacher groups as "boosters," and at Wednesday night's board meeting, she struck down a motion that would classify them that way, arguing that it would do harm to those groups. The school board has been debating revisions to the B-W School District's Policy 707, which details what kinds of groups can use district facilities and what costs those groups will …

As a point of clarification, the PTO and PTA are CURRENTLY classified as "school support groups." What some board members are actually arguing for is a change in classification that would move the PTO and PTA into a "school group" category rather than "school support group." Administration's recommendation is to keep the PTO and PTA as "school support groups" but to change what those support …   more ›

Guidelines Revision for Board Vacancies and Other Notes from April 4 B-W School Board Mtg.

A special budget meeting is announced, school spirit apparel, AP tests, graduation speakers, bus concerns, and other items.

B-W Student Reps Revisit 'Disgusting' Hall Passes Issue Read here. School Leaders Consider Revising Guidelines for Filling Board Seats There are policies, and then, there are guidelines. Members of the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board are required to abide by policies that either they or past board members set for the B-W School District, but guidelines are another story—merely suggestions for board members for how to operate in particular situations. Either way, board members must approve policies and guidelines alike before they are put into practice. And one set of guidelines that board members are considering for adoption this April lays out suggestions for filling vacant board seats. The guidelines being considered—available here on the…

The booster groups and other parent groups need this as their fundraising, which in turns helps the teachers, students and the schools with their programs. If families need merchandise they can go right to the Spirit Store located in the BHS building. The board would be working against their own schools. The School Board could help promote those who already have BW items. Advertise in the local …   more ›

B-W Superintendent Discusses Hot Topics at 'Coffee Talk'

Standardized testing, ARAMARK, extracurricular eligibility and other issues.

Nearing the end of his time as the superintendent of the Baldwin-Whitehall School District, Dr. Lawrence C. Korchnak sat down for an informal "Coffee Talk" with the public at the district offices on Wednesday morning. Korchnak, in his last school year with Baldwin-Whitehall, sipped coffee from a plastic foam cup along with a few district parents in attendance. The superintendent didn't give much of an opening speech, instead diving into an open Q-and-A session. "This is your chance to say what you want to say," Korchnak said, "and no animus." The nearly two-hour discussion ranged from concerns over standardized testing to the district's switch to an in-house food service to a recently debated policy that calls for stricter academic …

B-W School Leaders Debate 70-Percent Eligibility Topic

Students falling below a 70 in any core subject will miss extracurricular time, starting Sunday.

UPDATE: Read this story in conjunction with the one seen here. A revision made in November to the Baldwin-Whitehall School District's policy on student participation in extracurricular activities (Policy 122) goes into effect on Sunday, March 11. The Baldwin-Whitehall School Board voted, 8-1, in November to revise that policy so that students in grades 7-12 with below a 70-percent grade in any core subject could not participate in any extracurricular activity, from basketball to Math League to Drama Club and beyond. A paragraph of that policy now reads, "To be eligible for any extracurricular activity, a student must maintain a 2.0 overall grade point average in all courses taken and must maintain passing grades in English, mathematics, …

PTA Members Claim "Grade Inflation" in Baldwin-Whitehall

Notes from the B-W Council of PTA’s Nov. 3 meeting.

“Grade Inflation” Are Baldwin-Whitehall teachers “inflating” students’ grades?  That’s the concern of some members of the Baldwin-Whitehall Council of PTA, who brought that potential issue to the attention of Dr. John D. Wilkinson, the B-W School District’s assistant superintendent of secondary education, at a PTA meeting on Thursday morning. Several members of the PTA group, which includes PTA/PTSA units from W.R. Paynter Elementary School, Baldwin High School and J.E. Harrison Middle School, engaged Wilkinson on Thursday in a conversation about perceived inconsistencies in the way that B-W teachers determine course grades.  The conversation was similar to the one that PTA members had with numerous school officials during October’s PTA …

School Board Candidates Debate a One-Sided Affair

No members of the "Residents for Lower Taxes and Better Education" committee appeared at the PTA-organized debate.

The Baldwin-Whitehall Council of PTA was hoping for a big turnout at its Baldwin-Whitehall School Board candidates debate on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the PTA, the candidates themselves didn’t turn out … mostly. Five of the nine remaining candidates for school board seats in Baldwin-Whitehall stayed away from the PTA’s debate at Salvatore’s in Baldwin Borough, which got under way at exactly 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday with opening remarks by Fred Vella, the PTA member who led the committee that organized the debate. Originally, five school board candidates told the PTA that they were coming, but Larry Pantuso backed out at 6:30 p.m. in an email to Vella and fellow PTA member Debbie Clinton. Pantuso cited “a personal matter” as his …

Five B-W School Board Candidates to Debate at Salvatore's on Wednesday

Larry Pantuso, Richard Kirsch, Lora Kalwarski, Marion Shannon and Tracy Macek will gather in south Baldwin Borough that night at 7:30.

The Baldwin-Whitehall Council of PTA will welcome five of the nine candidates running for Baldwin-Whitehall School Board seats this November to a public debate at Salvatore's in south Baldwin Borough this Wednesday night at 7:30. The B-W PTA mailed invitations to all nine candidates, but only five have agreed to participate in the debate, according to PTA member Fred Vella, who is leading the committee that has organized the event. The five attendees will be Richard J. Kirsch, Lora J. Kalwarski, Marion M. Shannon and Tracy Macek of the "Committee to Build a Better Board" and Larry Pantuso of the "Residents for Lower Taxes and Better Education" committee. Each of the "Better Board" committee members still in the running for school board …

Security Cameras at Harrison and Concerns Over Grading System (Oct. 6 PTA Meeting Notes)

Read about two important topics from Thursday morning’s meeting.

Surveillance Cameras Coming to Harrison Middle School J.E. Harrison Middle School Principal Michael R. Wetmiller told the Baldwin-Whitehall Council of PTA on Thursday morning that Harrison Middle will have surveillance cameras installed next week for use on its campus.  “If you walk through the halls, it’s really quiet. Kids are really good,” Wetmiller said. “There’s nothing going on, but I’ve always thought that being content is when bad things can happen. “I want to stay on top of safety and security in the building at all times even though things are going so well.” Wetmiller said that Harrison will use 15 of the same type of surveillance cameras being used at Baldwin High School. “Hopefully, they’re not really needed for much other …
