A winter weather advisory has been issued for our area.
Expect freezing rain and ice accumulations of about a tenth of an inch on Friday in the Pittsburgh area. That's the word from the National Weather Service, which issued a winter weather advisory that is in effect on Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. The freezing rain is expected to begin between 6 and 8 a.m. and end between 1 and 3 p.m. The weather service warns of hazardous travel conditions because of ice-covered roads. The National Weather Service issues the advisory.
You probably noticed this already, but it's windy out there. In fact, it is so windy that the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory that is in effect until 3 a.m. on Tuesday for western Pennsylvania and its surrounding areas. How windy is it? The forecast calls for winds from 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. The strongest winds are expected through 7 p.m. before gradually diminishing through the evening. Scattered tree and power line damage can be expected, the weather service states. Minor property damage is possible with the highest gusts. The National Weather Service forecasts hazardous travel conditions.
Two Clipper-type systems will mean lots of snow in western Pennsylvania this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. A winter weather advisory for snow is in effect from 10 a.m. on Saturday to 7 p.m. on Sunday. The weather service forecasts snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches, and those totals could go as high as 6 to 10 inches in higher-ridge elevations. The snow will begin mid-morning Saturday and end Sunday evening, with the heaviest snow coming on Saturday afternoon into midday Sunday, the NWS states on its website. The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the Ohio River in Pittsburgh. The river at The Point is forecast to rise above 18 feet by Thursday evening, which will flood the Monongahela River Parking Wharf. The weather service forecasts the Ohio to crest at around 18.5 feet by early Friday morning and then fall below 18 feet by Friday evening. You'd better bundle up this week, as bitterly cold temperatures are expected to move into Pittsburgh. There is also a chance of snow on Monday and Tuesday in the South Hills.
You'd better bundle up this week, as bitterly cold temperatures are expected to move into the Pittsburgh region, including Baldwin-Whitehall. Dennis Sims, a meteorologist at Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville Borough, told Patch this past week that he expected the bitter temperatures to arrive in the city's South Hills area on Tuesday. Sims said that the middle of the week would have low temperatures in the single digits and highs in the teens. That forecast was backed up by the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Allegheny County beginning Tuesday night and lasting into Wednesday morning. Snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected in our area, and the advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. on Tuesday until 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
