Police Planning DUI Patrols in the South Hills

Numerous police departments, including Baldwin Township's, are planning to participate this weekend.

Numerous police departments from across Pittsburgh's South Hills area, including Baldwin Township's, are planning to participate in roving DUI patrols on Friday night and early Saturday morning. Other participating police departments include ones from Bridgeville Borough, Scott Township, Heidelberg Borough, Collier Township, South Fayette Township, Mt. Lebanon, Castle Shannon Borough, Dormont Borough and Green Tree Borough. Officers from those municipalities will be on patrol looking for impaired drivers. However, they will not set up any stationary checkpoints throughout the night, police said. The effort is in conjunction with the Mt. Ford Recalls 2013 Vehicle

A brake pedal issue affecting more than 8,000 SUVs prompts the recall.

The Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 8,000 of its 2013 Escape compact SUVs because of a potential problem affecting the brake pedal, CNN has reported. The recall affects SUVs made between March 8 and June 7, 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Involved in the recall are 8,266 Escapes.  Ford representatives say that mispositioned carpet that is padding the vehicles' center console trim panels may be pushed outward, reducing clearance with the pedals, according to the NHTSA. That reduced clearance may mean that a driver's foot could brush the side of a brake pedal when going from the accelerator to the brake, thus increasing stopping distances and the risk of a crash. PennDOT Seeks Driver Feedback in Online Safety Survey

Baldwin-Whitehall residents encouraged to participate.

Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation are asking Pennsylvania motorists—including those, of course, from Baldwin Borough, Whitehall Borough and Baldwin Township—to help the department's highway safety efforts by sharing their opinions on traffic safety enforcement and driving behaviors. The information will be collected via an online survey available through July 27 at www.JustDrivePA.com. The 22-question survey focuses on highway safety issues, including seat belts, impaired driving, speeding, motorcycles and distracted driving. People completing the survey may remain anonymous but are asked to provide their genders, ages and ZIP codes. More than 3,500 people responded to 2011's survey. Last year's notable results …
