Baldwin and Whitehall boaters will get a heads up if a combined sewer overflow alert has been issued.
The Allegheny County Health Department will issue water advisories for the 2013 river recreation season beginning Wednesday, May 15, and continuing through Monday, Sept. 30. The advisories indicate whether water quality in rivers and streams is normal or if a combined sewer overflow (CSO) alert has been issued. Alerts are issued when significant rainfall causes sewers carrying a combination of sewage and storm water to overflow and contaminate rivers and streams. A CSO alert does not prohibit recreational activity but rather cautions people to minimize water contact during outings. Those with weakened immune systems and open cuts or sores are more vulnerable to infection from exposure to contaminated water. Boaters and others who enjoy the…

Volunteers raise funds for area development by jumping into the Mon' River as part of the annual Pittsburgh Polar Plunge.
Hundreds of Pittsburghers successively broke the world's 3-meter doggypaddle record on New Year's Day after braving 36-degree temperatures to jump into the Monongahela River. And nearly 30 of those record-breakers were community leaders and volunteers from Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs. The Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall folks, headed by John F. Slater—owner of the John F. Slater Funeral Home in Brentwood and the board chair of Economic Development South—accepted sponsorships of varying amounts to make good on their promise of arctic swimming. All told, over $4,000 were raised to be split between Economic Development South (EDS), the Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, the Brentwood Business Owners Association and the…

Take part in a great cause on New Year's Day.
If you can think of a better way to support development projects in Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs, please let us know. But for now, we're jumping into the Mon'. Baldwin-Whitehall Patch Editor Bob Healy—that's me—will join the crazy folks from the Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, the Brentwood Business Owners Association, Economic Development South and the Brentwood Park Initiative in a New Year's Day Polar Plunge into the Monongahela River. Participants—open to all people—will try to raise funds by obtaining sponsors for their 9:30 a.m. plunges that day. The participants will meet at their launching pad—the Monongahela River Parking Wharf, or "Mon Wharf"—to bask in the warmth of their community before basking in…

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch has partnered with the Baldwin Historical Society to bring you a weekly trivia question that delves into our area's colorful past. Pat Lombardi and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures. BY THE WAY, the first Baldwin-Whitehall Patch trivia question came on Oct. 15, 2011—just over one year ago. Thank you to Pat and Patty for these gifts to the community! Here is this week's question: This picture was taken around 1920. It shows the Monongahela River between Pittsburgh's Oakland area and East Carson Street/River Road. Notice the oil tanks toward the front of the picture. They contained much of the area's oil, including heating oil. What is the name of …

No license is required on Labor Day to fish in the state's waterways.
Families and friends visiting Pennsylvania's popular outdoor spots, such as the Monongahela River, this holiday weekend can enjoy a day of free fishing, thanks to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3, marks the second of the state's two free fishing days of 2012 when no fishing license is required. Fish-for-Free Days allow anyone—residents and non-residents—to legally fish in Pennsylvania from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. All other fishing regulations apply. The year's earlier Fish-for-Free Day was Memorial Day, May 28. "Fish-for-Free days are a convenient way to introduce friends and family to the sport of fishing," Fish and Boat Commission Executive Director John Arway said. "Many families spend the day at …

Pat Lombardi and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures. Here is this week's question: At around 1860, shortly before the Civil War, a busy sawmill rested along the Monongahela River. And built up around that mill was a thriving town that boasted a boat-building industry, stores, hotels, an inn, taverns, a train station, a glass factory, a school and a post office. The post office stayed in service until 1914. What was the name of this small town in the Baldwin area? Read other Baldwin-Whitehall Trivia Time questions here…

A 24-year-old woman was killed on Sunday in a jet ski accident at the Dashields Locks and Dam across the river from Edgeworth and Sewickley, just as National Safe Boating Week got under way.
An Aliquippa woman was killed and a Robinson Township man injured following a jet ski accident on Sunday on the Ohio River. Melissa Mason, 24, and Kevin Ludwig, 26, were both rushed to the Heritage Valley Sewickley hospital shortly after 4 p.m. that day. Ludwig was treated and released before 7 p.m., while Mason was pronounced dead at a Pittsburgh hospital, according to Lawrence P. Furlong, assistant supervisor of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's Bureau of Law Enforcement. With Memorial Day—the official start of boating season—quickly approaching, the Fish and Boat Commission, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, are hoping to remind the public about safe recreational boating. Many residents in …
