Super Bug, or Norovirus, May Be in the South Hills

As flu season wanes, a new Super Bug from Australia is taking its place in the spotlight.

A new strain of the highly contagious norovirus has reached the United States from Australia. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the virus, named GII.4 Sydney because it's believed to have started in Sydney, Australia, is currently the leading cause of norovirus outbreaks in the United States. In the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released on Friday, the norovirus is described as the leading cause of epidemic gastroenteritis, including foodborne outbreaks, in the United States. Hospitalization and mortality associated with norovirus infection occur most frequently among elderly persons, young children and immunocompromised patients. MRTSA Employing Cutting-Edge CPR Technology

'LUCAS went on its first cardiac arrest 90 minutes after being unpacked from the delivery box.' - paramedic Jesse Siefert

In an effort to improve patient outcome from sudden cardiac arrest, Medical Rescue Team South Authority (MRTSA), which has a base in Whitehall Borough, has begun employing a new LUCAS 2 mechanical CPR device. According to paramedic Jesse Siefert, MRTSA is the second emergency medical services agency in Allegheny County to utilize the cutting-edge tool. "The ultimate goal for any cardiac arrest patient is to restore ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation) as soon as possible," Siefert said, touting the device's "continuous chest compression" feature. (Watch the YouTube video above to see the LUCAS 2 device in action.) MRTSA was able to purchase the $13,570 LUCAS 2 thanks to a generous grant from the Snee-Reinhardt Charitable Foundation, …

Baldwin Football's Jay Morrison Recovering at Children's Hospital

The junior left Friday's game on a stretcher.

Baldwin High School's junior defensive back Jay Morrison has delivered some of his team's biggest hits this year, but during Friday night's Homecoming loss to Woodland Hills High School, he also absorbed the biggest hit. With the Wolverines up, 7-0, late in the first quarter and driving in Baldwin territory, senior running back Alex Beasley ran over Morrison—the Highlanders' leading tackler—on a nine-yard gain. The tale of the tape: Beasley, 6 feet, 230 lbs; Morrison, 5 feet 9 inches, 175 pounds. "When I hit No. 2 (Morrison)—God bless 'im—but I saw the middle was open, one cut and upfield, and I squared my shoulders," Beasley said when describing the play. The game was delayed for several minutes while Morrison was taken from the field on …

Leftovers from Sept. 4 Baldwin Twp. Meeting

A quasi-update on the Mt. Lebanon outdoor athletics complex, dates and times for Halloween and Christmas celebrations are announced, a bus stop signs update, and more.

Residents Will Be Notified of Mt. Lebanon Complex Updates Baldwin Township Board of Commissioners member Bob Downey said in an interview after a board meeting on Tuesday night that township officials have not received an update from Mt. Lebanon officials yet regarding their plans (or even lack thereof) for the development an outdoor athletics complex on the Baldwin Township border. The approximately 23-acre-large "McNeilly Park" complex will include "less than probably even a quarter of an acre" of Baldwin Township land—according to Mt. Lebanon's Municipal Planner Keith McGill—but some Baldwin officials and other area municipal leaders have still expressed concern over how the park will affect non-Mt. Lebanonites. Downey said that, should …
