New Baldwin Twp. Manager Focused on Continuing Improvements

Rob Zahorchak is Baldwin Township’s new manager, as of April 2.

Rob Zahorchak has only been in the manager’s seat for about two weeks, but he’s already working to improve Baldwin Township, and get to know its residents in the process. Zahorchak, 29, is the new manager of Baldwin Township, and he started on April 2. “It’s been exciting,” he said. “I’ve been learning the township inside and out. It’s a crash course. There’s no other way to learn it.” Zahorchak is a Greensburg native who earned an undergraduate degree in political science and a graduate degree in public administration, both from the University of Pittsburgh. He worked for the Municipality of Murrysville as a graduate student, then did economic development and policy work for Duane Morris Government Strategies, formerly GSP Consulting. …

Local Pets Resources: Thursday Is National Pet Day

Where can I care for my pet in Baldwin-Whitehall? Or should I adopt?

National Pet Day is Thursday, April 11, and what better time to care for your critter? Or perhaps this is the right time to adopt a new pet. According to petdayusa.com, the day was started by celebrity pet lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige in order "to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters all across the nation." There are a few popular Pittsburgh-area shelters where you can adopt pets, including Animal Friends along Camp Horne Road in Ohio Township and the Animal Rescue League along Hamilton Avenue in Larimer. Baldwin Township Police Make Pair of Arrests

Both women are being charged with DUI.

Castle Shannon Woman Arrested A Baldwin Township police officer stopped a motorist on McNeilly Road at around 1:19 a.m. on Sunday for speeding and failing to obey a traffic light at the Sussex Avenue-McNeilly intersection, Baldwin Township police Chief Terrence P. O'Brien said. The officer reported smelling alcohol coming from the motorist—Renee Herring, 31, of Belleville Street in Castle Shannon Borough—O'Brien said, and put her through a field-sobriety test, which she failed. She was then arrested and taken to St. Clair Hospital for a blood test (results pending). Police are charging Herring with suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Man, Woman Arrested in Baldwin Twp. on DUI Charges

Both arrests occurred on Feb. 16.

Part I Working in cooperation with the Mt. Lebanon Area DUI Task Force, a Baldwin Township police officer stopped a motorist in the 2600 block of Route 88 in Pittsburgh's Overbrook neighborhood at around 12:12 a.m. on Feb. 16 for erratic driving, Baldwin Township police Chief Terrence P. O'Brien said. Brian Daetwyler, 33, of Village Green Drive in the Heritage Hills complex of Jefferson Hills Borough, was speeding and crossing the center line in the 100 block of McNeilly Road, O'Brien said. Daetwyler displayed signs of intoxication, O'Brien said, before the officer put him through breath-analyzer and field-sobriety tests, which he failed, and took him to the Mt. Lebanon police station for a blood test (results pending). Police are charging…

McNeilly Road House Fire Kills Two People Thursday

Fire companies from Dormont and Castle Shannon joined Mt. Lebanon firefighters in battling the blaze.

TRAFFIC UPDATE (3:39 p.m.): All of McNeilly Road has been reopened. A Thursday morning fire at a McNeilly Road home in Mt. Lebanon killed two people. The Post-Gazette is reporting that crews were dispatched to 916 McNeilly Rd. about 7:20 a.m. Mt. Lebanon police Deputy Chief Mike Gallagher said the house was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. In addition to Mt. Lebanon firefighters, fire companies from Dormont and Castle Shannon boroughs also responded.  The Allegheny County fire marshal is investigating the cause and origin of the fire, but the blaze is not suspicious, according to the Post-Gazette. Also according to the P-G, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identified the couple as Dennis Miller, 61, …

Wednesday's Powerball a Record $500 Million (or More) Jackpot

Where to buy a Powerball ticket in Baldwin-Whitehall and the odds of winning the jackpot.

The historic Powerball jackpot rose to a record $500 million on Tuesday, and many Baldwin-Whitehall residents are expected to purchase a ticket on Wednesday—if they haven't already. According to this Pennsylvania Lottery Web page, there are quite a few places to purchase a Powerball ticket in Baldwin-Whitehall. There has been no Powerball winner since Oct. 6. The chance of winning the $500 million jackpot is 1 in 175,223,510. The Powerball is drawn every Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:59 p.m. Ticket sales are cut off at least 59 minutes before the draw. Each ticket costs $2. Good luck. PHOTOS: Baldwin Township Light-Up Night

Christmas arrives on McNeilly Road.

Santa and Mrs. Claus made their way to Baldwin Township on Sunday night to light up the Christmas season, and township resident Robert Snyder was there to capture images from the event. The Clauses arrived at the ALDI parking lot at the intersection of McNeilly Road and Sussex Avenue at around 6 p.m. by way of a Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department truck. (Castle Shannon's firefighters service Baldwin Township.) Residents from Baldwin and other surrounding communities gathered in the parking lot near a large township Christmas tree as goodie bags were handed out to children, who also posed for a picture on Santa's lap.
