WPIAL Champs Smorey, Jackson Lead Baldwin into State Track Meet

Three Baldwin boys are headed to Shippensburg.

Two Baldwin High School juniors earned individual titles this past Friday at the WPIAL track & field championships, including Luke Smorey, perhaps Baldwin's best shot at a state title this coming weekend. Smorey, the 2013 WPIAL AAA boys javelin champ, will join two other Baldwin boys at the PIAA AAA championships, to held at Shippensburg University from May 24-25. Smorey hit 200 feet, 3 inches at the WPIAL meet, good for the No. 2 seed at the state championships. The No. 1 seed's mark is at 208-8. Fellow Baldwin junior Gary Jackson is the WPIAL's triple jump champ. Jackson leaped 45-1 at WPIALs and is seeded 14th at the state meet with that mark. The No. 1 seed is at 48-6. Baldwin's Luke Aaron, a senior pole vaulter, also qualified for the…

RECAP/STATS: Hawks Too Much for Highlanders, 42-25

Baldwin's season ends at 3-6 overall.

To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. Don't hesitate to include photos of the marching band, cheerleaders, coaches and fans! Full statistics (including play-by-play) are available in the media gallery above. For the first time in his four years as the head coach of the Baldwin High School varsity football team, Jim Wehner's Highlanders will not win more games than they did in their previous season. Baldwin High finished its 2012 season at 3-6 overall after falling to the visitors from Bethel Park High School, 42-25, on Senior Night on Friday—one game worse than the Highlanders' 4-5 mark from a year ago. In 2010, Baldwin was also 3-6, but that was after a 2-8 mark in 2009 (Wehner's first season …

I was in attendence at the board meeting last night and I commend the parent who stood up and made a statement, it is about time the people of this district stand up and fight for whats right. The past two posts from former players tell me all I need to know about Wehner, quite frankly, the guy is not getting through to his players. I have heard numerous people in the community talk about how …   more ›

Baldwin Football Will Miss WPIAL Playoffs

A tiebreaking procedure eliminates the Highlanders ahead of Senior Night.

The Baldwin High School varsity football team will match its record from a year ago should it upset conference opponent Bethel Park High School on Senior Night at Baldwin Stadium this Friday. But Friday's game—it starts at 7:30—will be meaningless in terms of Baldwin's 2012 postseason chances. The Highlanders could indeed tie for the fifth and final WPIAL AAAA Southeastern Conference playoffs spot should they beat Bethel Park and both Penn Hills High School and Peters Township High School lose on Friday. That would put all three teams' conference records at 3-5. (Overall records do not matter.) But, since Baldwin is a combined 0-2 this year against Penn Hills and Peters Township, the best that the Highlanders can hope for, using a head-to-…

I agree the AD has had his head up his a$$ for a long time. I don't think I could stomach another hiring by Sortino. How many losing coaches does he have to hire before he loses his job? They should wipe the whole slate clean and make sure none of the current coaches are rehired. I don't know why Whener was aloud to hire coaces from the last staff. Losing breeds losing. RECAP/STATS: Highlanders Smack Macs, 31-7

Canon-McMillan will not make the 2012 playoffs; Baldwin is still in the hunt.

Full statistics (including play-by-play) are available in the media gallery above. Looking very much like the quarterback whom his head coach says that he is, Baldwin High School sophomore Doug Altavilla threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns to lead his team to a 31-7 win over Canon-McMillan High School in a WPIAL AAAA Southeastern Conference football game on Friday night. In the first half alone, Altavilla completed eight of nine passes for 240 yards and both TDs. He finished the game going 9-for-13 against the host Big Macs (1-7 overall, 1-6 Southeastern), even though …

RECAP/STATS: Highlanders Escape Fox Chapel with 27-20 Win

Baldwin snaps four-game losing streak with road victory.

Full statistics (including play-by-play) are available in the media gallery above. The Fox Chapel Area High School football team doesn't throw the ball much. Turns out, there's a reason for that. The Foxes threw six passes during Friday night's non-conference game against visiting Baldwin High School, and only one was caught ... by a Baldwin player. The Highlanders' sophomore linebacker Donald West stepped in front of a short pass from junior quarterback Brandon Mitchell early in the third quarter, intercepted it and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown to give Baldwin …

RECAP/STATS: Panthers Shred Highlanders, 47-6

Dominating performance pushes Upper St. Clair to 5-0.

Full statistics (including play-by-play) are available in the media gallery above. Upper St. Clair High School won the opening coin toss. Simply, it was a sign of things to come. The host Panthers (5-0, 5-0) dominated Baldwin High School (1-4, 1-4) on Friday night in a WPIAL AAAA Southeastern Conference football game, racing out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead and finishing with an impressive 47-6 victory. Upper St. Clair never punted in the game, and when the Panthers' junior wide receiver Mike McGuire returned the second half's opening kickoff for a 92-yard touchdown—USC …

I have a hard time believing Uncle Helix due to several reasons as I state below: 1. Grizzley bears would not be allowed to compete in the WPIAL 2. From what I have read, Yaneti was not inspirational 3. The brothers Voelker in fact derailed a train by mearly looking at it together at the same time (haha…lol. Ok. I made that fallacy up) 4. Uncle Helix was drinking alcohol since 7:30am Please let …   more ›

RECAP/STATS: Mt. Lebo Routs Baldwin, 42-7

Highlanders drop their second in a row.

Full statistics (including play-by-play) are available in the media gallery above. The numbers don't always tell the whole story. This time, they do. Mt. Lebanon High School used a 479-210 advantage in total yards and an 18-9 nod in first downs to rout host Baldwin High School, 42-7, in a WPIAL AAAA Southeastern Conference football game on Friday night. Mt. Lebanon (3-1, 3-0) led from start to finish, and when the Highlanders (1-3, 1-3) started a drive with 2 minutes, 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter, a mercy rule went into effect to run the game clock and help expire…

Anonymous, I totally agree with what you have said. The unfortunate thing here is that Wehner will NEVER give Luke that chance. I know the family and I know that he ( Luke ) has lost his interest in being QB. He does what is asked of him for his team. Another great athlete flushed down the tubes because of bad coaching. You asked Mr. Whener Why? I think alot of people would like an answer.   more ›

VIDEO: Penn Hills Edges Baldwin, 10-8, in TV Thriller

Last-minute field goal trumps Highlanders' dramatic comeback.

To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. Don't hesitate to include photos of the marching band, cheerleaders, coaches and fans! Thank you to StatEasy for the YouTube videos of Baldwin highlights. Full statistics (including play-by-play) are available in the media gallery above. Not just once but twice during the last few minutes of Baldwin High School's Thursday night football game at Penn Hills High School, Baldwin's junior utilityman Luke Smorey was a hero. But in the end, it didn't matter, as a 28-yard field goal by Penn Hills' senior placekicker Peter Gula with 32 seconds left trumped a dramatic Highlanders comeback. As it is, Penn Hills (2-1, 2-1) gets a leg up over the Highlanders (1-2, 1-2) …

RECAP/STATS: Baldwin Saddles Mustangs with 35-7 Defeat

'I just ran with anger.' - Baldwin running back Dorian Brown

Around 'em, over 'em, past 'em, through 'em. One way or another, Baldwin High School's Dorian Brown was not to be tackled easily on Friday night. In fact, on three occasions—four if you count a play negated by a penalty—none of the 11 Plum High School Mustangs on the field at Baldwin High Stadium could stop the brutish senior running back from reaching the end zone. Plum (0-2, 0-2) also couldn't stop the host Highlanders from improving to 1-1 overall on Friday and 1-1 in the new WPIAL AAAA football Southeastern Conference by way of a dominating 35-7 win. Baldwin outgained Plum by exactly 400 yards, and Brown picked up 234 of them on 16 rushes, including his touchdown runs of 64, 54 and 25 yards, respectively. "He was as advertised," Plum's…

RECAP/STATS: Peters Pummels Baldwin, 40-12

The Highlanders lose five fumbles to the host Indians. Quarterback Altavilla shaken up.

To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. (Don't hesitate to include photos of the marching band, cheerleaders and fans.) Full statistics, including play-by-play, are available in this article's media gallery. The final score was as ugly as the Highlanders looked on Friday night—or, as beautiful as the Indians looked, depending on which colors you wear. Senior running back Mike Minjock returned after missing all of the 2011 season with a ligament tear in his right knee to rush for a career-high 244 yards and four touchdowns on just 19 carries, and the hosts from Peters Township High School (1-0, 1-0) romped visiting Baldwin High School (0-1, 0-1), 40-12, in both teams' first-ever WPIAL AAAA …
