Volunteers raise funds for area development by jumping into the Mon' River as part of the annual Pittsburgh Polar Plunge.

Hundreds of Pittsburghers successively broke the world's 3-meter doggypaddle record on New Year's Day after braving 36-degree temperatures to jump into the Monongahela River. And nearly 30 of those record-breakers were community leaders and volunteers from Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs. The Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall folks, headed by John F. Slater—owner of the John F. Slater Funeral Home in Brentwood and the board chair of Economic Development South—accepted sponsorships of varying amounts to make good on their promise of arctic swimming. All told, over $4,000 were raised to be split between Economic Development South (EDS), the Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, the Brentwood Business Owners Association and the…

Visions for Vacancies: What Could Fill a Need at Curry Road Commons?

Spaces are available for lease.

It wasn't too long ago that this writer would frequent the Curry Commons shopping center in Baldwin Borough for a hoagie from Mariana's Pizza or a carton of iced tea from the corner mini-mart. Man, what was the name of that place? Haf-Mart? In any event, those stores are long gone, and with them has come vacancies along Curry Road. But Burns & Scalo Real Estate Services has those properties available for lease, and the annual rent, according to the Burns & Scalo website, is negotiable. Currently occupying space at Curry Commons are places like Salvatore's (banquet hall), South Hills Embroidery (apparel and design shop) and McCoy's Pub (bar/restaurant), among others. Across the street is Legacy Lanes (bowling) and a couple of auto repair …
