Baldwin Boro Manager Calls Soccer Group's Petition 'Unfounded'

The Baldwin Whitehall Soccer Association claims that use of Colewood Park fields is 'excessive.'

A petition started by the Baldwin Whitehall Soccer Association (BWSA) might go for naught, as Baldwin Borough Manager John Barrett has called the association's concerns "unfounded." The association has expressed to the Baldwin Council that it is allowing "excessive" use of south Baldwin's Colewood Park fields. The petition states that borough officials granted permission for lacrosse activity on the fields even after the BWSA invested $20,000 in field repairs. "BWSA has invested heavily in time/volunteers and money to improve the fields at Colewood," the petition states on Change.org. "BWSA has decided to limit our use of the fields to allow them to grow and establish. Yet, the borough has issued a permit (for lacrosse)." Barrett maintains…

PHOTOS: Baldwin H.S. Talent Show

Senior Daniel McTiernan earns first place.

Do you have images from this event, too? Add them to our media gallery by clicking on one of the green "Upload Photos and Videos" buttons above. Don't forget to add captions! Daniel McTiernan played piano and sang his way into first place at a Baldwin High School talent show on Tuesday night. The show was presented by the Baldwin High girls lacrosse program for the fourth straight year and brought over 200 people into the high school's auditorium to enjoy 17 acts, including McTiernan's humor-infused, crowd-energizing performance of a Justin Timberlake medley. Sha-quea Hatch and A'shanti Anderson's joint acting routine was hilarious enough to earn the duo a second-place finish, and the team of Steven Andrulonis and Darien Babinger captured …

New 'Baldwin Highlander Pass' on Sale Now

Passes will be good for admission to home sports events throughout the academic year.

In an effort to make admission to scholastic sports events at Baldwin High School easier and more affordable, the Baldwin-Whitehall School District will debut the "Baldwin Highlander Pass" this fall—a one-time-pay ticket that will allow access to events year-round. A Highlander Pass includes general admission for all home Baldwin High football games, soccer games, basketball games, swimming & diving meets, wrestling matches, lacrosse games and volleyball matches during a given school year (approximately 80 total events). The passes cannot be used, however, for WPIAL or PIAA playoffs games or for any team tournament events. Nevertheless, the passes should create a significant cost savings for many families, especially those that take …

Baldwin Softball, Boys Lacrosse Both Fall in WPIAL Semifinals

Those teams' seasons are now complete.

Baldwin High School's varsity softball and boys lacrosse teams saw their quests for 2011 WPIAL titles end on Wednesday, as both squads lost tournament semifinals games. Baldwin High's softball team fell, 11-1, to Seneca Valley High School in a 4 p.m. WPIAL AAAA game at neutral-site Woodland Hills High School. Shortly later, Baldwin's boys lacrosse squad lost to Greensburg Central Catholic High School, 15-10, in a 6 p.m. WPIAL Division II contest at neutral-site North Allegheny High School. "These guys left it all out on the field tonight," said Shawn Leydig, a former Highlander in his first year as head coach of the boys lacrosse program. "Even though we came up a little short, the guys have every reason to keep their heads held high. "No …

Baldwin Boys Lacrosse in WPIAL’s Division II Semifinals

Highlanders play this Wednesday night at 6 for a shot at the crown.

Some things tend to get lost in the shuffle as school and interscholastic sports years draw to a close every May. Unfortunately, one of those things that has been overlooked, at least by many in the Baldwin-Whitehall area this year, is a truly outstanding season being put together by Baldwin High School’s varsity boys lacrosse team. Baldwin High, which will play in the semifinals of the WPIAL’s Division II boys championships this Wednesday, is 14-3 during the 2011 season. Though the Highlanders compete in the lower of the WPIAL’s two lacrosse divisions, LaxPower.com’s computer ratings have them ranked ninth overall out of the WPIAL’s 34 teams, ahead of many Division I schools. Baldwin started the season on fire, winning its first six games…

In Vogue: Girls Lacrosse Team Hopes to Start Something Popular at Baldwin High School

The Highlanders are in contention for the first playoffs spot in team history.

They may wear masks, but members of Baldwin High School’s varsity girls lacrosse team are not trying to hide. No, the Highlanders want you to know exactly who they are, and given their involvement in the Baldwin-Whitehall community—and how well they’ve played this year—chances are that the ladies will continue to be noticed. Like most WPIAL teams, Baldwin (8-4 overall, 7-3 Division II Section 1) is hoping to earn a spot in the playoffs this year, but perhaps unlike many other squads, Baldwin’s girls have aspirations beyond their on-field performance. “We preach to our players that we represent something bigger than ourselves,” said Richard Deemer, a boys assistant soccer coach at Baldwin in the fall and the head girls lacrosse coach in the…

Baldwin girls lacrosse is a very amazing team. Our baldwin community expects a lot from them this season. We expect a lot more wins. Hopefully our girls will reach their goal and make it to playoffs. We love to watch our girls play, the way they play is actually stunning to watch. Those girls would be named as seniors Hannah Dobos and Crista Rosborough, Junior Erin Flaherty, and Sophomore Alexa …   more ›

Julian Routh Wins "Baldwin's Best" Talent Show at BHS Auditorium on Feb. 2

Over 200 audience members watch 13 acts perform for the benefit of Baldwin girls lacrosse.

In what Coordinator Richard Deemer called "a huge success," the "Baldwin's Best" talent show entertained over 200 audience members at the Baldwin High School auditorium last night, Feb. 2. More specifically, the show's 13 performers – not including fine opening and closing acts by the Baldwin Dance Team – did the entertaining. Tickets were $5 each, and proceeds benefited Baldwin's girls lacrosse team. Unlike the movie "Groundhog Day," these Feb. 2 acts were anything but the same over and over again. Each act was unique in its own way. Still, there had to be a winner, and Julian Routh (pictured) was deemed to be the night's top performer. Routh performed a song that he wrote titled "Two to Six." Le'Sha Peterson earned the event's runner-up …

Richard Deemer: Fielding Life's Lessons One Laugh at a Time

Win or lose, good times or bad, Baldwin High School's Richard Deemer shows students how to learn from their experiences.

A few years ago, as Baldwin High School was undergoing a major renovation, several classes were held in construction trailers, which felt at times more like saunas. But in spite of cramped, uncomfortable learning conditions, laughter could be heard coming from one trailer. It was Richard Deemer's social studies class. "There were times when I taught in the classroom next door," said Jonathan Peebles, now Vice Principal at Baldwin High School. "You would always hear laughter coming through the walls." "There's more to teaching than what's in the textbook," said Deemer. "Life experiences are definitely huge." Dealing with whatever life throws at you is a theme with Deemer, now in his 13th year at Baldwin High School. A graduate of Bethel …
