THEN AND NOW: Highlanders Sing 'The Hundred Pipers' for Dr. Shalley

Shalley, Baldwin High's former choral director, died on March 6.

Former Baldwin High School singers said goodbye to longtime choral director Dr. Regis V. Shalley last month the best way that they could, belting out a rendition of "The Hundred Pipers" during Dr. Shalley's funeral Mass at Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Baldwin Borough. The alumni gathered to sing at the conclusion of the Mass for Shalley, who was Baldwin High's choral director from 1954 to 1981 and died on March 6 at the age of 88. Current Baldwin choral director Kris Tranter oversaw the alumni performance. Along with "The Hundred Pipers"—fitting given Baldwin's mascot, the Highlander—the alumni performed "The Lord Bless You and Keep You," as well. ("The Hundred Pipers" is also known as "Wi' a Hundred Pipers/Annie …

Hello, Were you a Regis Shalley alumni? At this point, we are still planning BHS Alumni Choir Concert to honor Dr. Regis Shalley. I apologize for the late notice. I have been away for the last month or so taking care of some health concerns with my 5 year old daughter. I need to know who is committed to attending this concert in order for me to move forward with the plans to send you music and …   more ›

Baldwin Grad Part of '1776' Theater Cast

The musical, opening soon, will be the biggest production in Pittsburgh Public Theater history.

Justin Fortunato didn't exactly have a rough start to his career, at least in high school. The 2007 Baldwin High graduate was a rare Gene Kelly Award winner as a freshman and earned Kelly nominations three other times at Baldwin for excellence in local scholastic theater. Now a pro, Fortunato will appear later this month on the O'Reilly Theater stage for a month-long running of the Pittsburgh Public Theater's production of '1776.' The Tony Award-winning musical—Fortunato calls it "more of a play with music"—presents the heroes of the American Revolution in rousing songs and dances, comic encounters and impassioned politics. Directed by Ted Pappas, the show will run at the O'Reilly from Jan. 24 to Feb. 24. Click here for times and to buy …

Baldwinaires VIDEO and Remaining Notes from Dec. 12 B-W School Board Meeting

Wednesday night was an eventful one in Whitehall.

Baldwinaires Performance (and Upcoming Shows) Baldwinaires, a singing group made up of Baldwin High School students, entertained attendees at Wednesday night's Baldwin-Whitehall School Board meeting with three different holiday songs. Baldwin High music teacher Kris Tranter led the group. (Watch the video accompanying this article to enjoy that performance.) On Dec. 16, the Baldwinaires will join the River City Brass Band for a performance at Baldwin High at 2 p.m. Tickets for that event start at $20 each for seniors and $22 each for other adults. Call 412-434-7222 to buy tickets and/or for more information. And on Dec. 20, a holiday chorus concert, which will include the Baldwinaires, will be performed at the high school at 7 p.m. Tickets…

B-W School Board Approves $83K+ Stage Rigging System

The measure received a unanimous vote on Wednesday night.

After expressing differing opinions throughout October over whether or not to spend roughly $84,000 to improve Baldwin High School's auditorium stage rigging system, the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board unanimously approved the measure on Wednesday night. Some board members, like Nancy Lee Crowder, have acknowledged that the district has other needs that could help to be addressed with that amount of money, but Crowder said on Wednesday that money left in the district's construction account—estimated at $296,000—cannot be used for anything other than construction-related projects. Explained district solicitor Ed Lawrence, "My opinion is that if it's (the construction money's) 'capital,' it should be expended for 'capital' purposes, and that …

I think the problem is "WHY" this money has to go towards construction. Yes, I understand while the school was under construction that they shouldn't be allowed to spend the money elsewhere so it could be completed. But the school is finished now. This reminds me of all of the federal money we received for the Port Authority's north shore connector. Our transportation system is a epic fail, …   more ›

No Vote on Baldwin H.S. Stage Rigging

B-W Board members table the item on Wednesday night. More details here.

The Baldwin-Whitehall School Board decided not to spend roughly $84,000 to improve Baldwin High School's auditorium stage rigging system ... not yet, anyway. After a lengthy discussion over how the old the current system is, how safe it is and what a new system could do, the board's members voted, 8-0, on Wednesday night to table (delay) a vote on the rigging system until it reconvenes on Nov. 7. (Board member Kevin J. Fischer was absent.) B-W School District solicitor Ed Lawrence confirmed with Paul D. Svirbel, district facilities director, that Baldwin-Whitehall would still be in compliance with the rigging's bidding process should it vote on it on Nov. 7. Some board members were dissatisfied during an Oct. 3 meeting when limited details…

Extracurricular Activities Eligibility Discussed Again in Baldwin-Whitehall

And plenty more from Wednesday night's school board meeting.

Extracurricular Activities Eligibility Confusion over what makes students eligible to participate in extracurricular activities in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District should come to an end next week. At least, that's the plan. New Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz told the B-W School Board at a meeting on Wednesday night that he will submit a revised extracurricular participation policy for the board to vote on next week. That revised policy is expected to enforce a uniform standard for not only student-athletes in grades 7-12 but also for any student in those grades who wishes to participate in other activities, such as German Club, student newspaper, et al. During the 2011-12 school year, district officials attempted to enforce a …

bd, I can honestly say when I went to vote, I had the names of everyone on the school board and voted for everyone that was running against them. Our school Board is a joke and I know I will keep on voting against them till they are gone. I don't care if they are democrats or republicans, I just know we need to get rid of all of them.   more ›

Eight Gene Kelly Nominations for Baldwin H.S.

The school is recognized for its production of 'Curtains.'

By earning an impressive eight nominations in 13 possible categories, Baldwin High School has put itself in fine position to walk away from the 2012 Gene Kelly Awards show with a good bit of hardware. Baldwin High garnered two Gene Kelly nominations in 2011 but came away with no awards. This year, the school could rebound with an array of trophies in various categories thanks to its spring production of "Curtains," a parody of 1950s "whodunnit" mystery theater. Baldwin's 2012 nominees: The Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera's 22nd Annual Gene Kelly Awards show will be held at The Benedum Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m. According to its website, the Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater …

April's Greatest Person: Connor Doran

Talented junior's star shines brightly year-round.

Sure, part of the reason that no one could take their eyes off of Connor Doran during Baldwin High School's production of "Curtains" last month was because he was playing the lead role. And yes, it's hard not to notice Doran while he's performing with the school's Baldwinaires choir since he's the only one behind the piano. But Connor is showcased these ways for a reason: He's mighty talented. Doran, a junior at Baldwin, hasn't wasted a moment of his high school years. And for those who have seen his impressive performances, they haven't wasted their time, either. The 16-year-old resident of south Baldwin Borough's Olympic Drive plays chromatic percussion (xylophone, et al.) for the Baldwin High marching band every fall, spends his winters…

Quote from Kris Tranter added.: "He's quite exceptional," Tranter said, "and I would have to say 'rare.' This is my 13th year teaching, and I've never seen a student with that kind of talent before—well-rounded talent, too. He's a great singer. He's a great actor. When you talk about his piano-playing abilities, you can't even explain it. He is just that good."   more ›

Baldwinaires VIDEO and Remaining Notes from Dec. 14 B-W School Board Meeting

Preliminary budget for 2012-13 to be advertised, DVD update, Baldwinaires performance, tuition vouchers opposed, Baldwin High bell schedule and much more.

Along with a new contract for service workers and presentations by Director of Technology Tim Winner and Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Dr. John D. Wilkinson, the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board heard and discussed a number of other important items at its meeting on Wednesday night. Some of the highlights of that meeting are as follows: Preliminary Budget for 2012-13 to Be Advertised The school board voted, 6-2, to advertise its preliminary 2012-13 budget, which was explained on Dec. 7 by district Superintendent Dr. Lawrence C. Korchnak as cautious and as a "worst-case scenario." The budget includes a proposed tax hike that could reach as much as an approximately 1-mill increase. On Dec. 7, Korchnak said that, in light of …
