Baldwin H.S. Gets Interim Principal

Principal Kevin O'Toole is on a leave of absence.

The Baldwin-Whitehall School Board accepted a recommendation made by B-W School District administration on Wednesday night to approve John L. Wolicki as the interim principal of Baldwin High School. Wolicki, who lives in the Latrobe area, will be paid $350 per day—not to exceed 45 days—starting on Thursday to fill in for Kevin O'Toole, the Baldwin High principal who was granted a leave of absence in January. The school board approved Wolicki and his pay rate with a 7-1 vote at its meeting on Wednesday. Board member Martin Michael Schmotzer cast the lone "no" vote. Fellow board member Ray Rosing was absent. The Wolicki vote was combined with payment for services rendered by two other people: Ann Bisignani of School House Consultants will be…

$350 a day is not a lot for a high school principal, who often puts in a lot more than 8 hrs a day, (not that it is even an hourly wage job--its a salaried job)   more ›

No Interim Principal Yet at Baldwin High School

But the school board did approve creating that position on Wednesday night. And read more from Wednesday's board meeting here.

Only Interim Principal Position Approved Baldwin-Whitehall School District Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz is not ready to recommend someone to be the interim principal at Baldwin High School, but the position itself was created by a 9-0 vote from the B-W School Board on Wednesday night. The position became necessary after Baldwin High Principal Kevin O'Toole was granted a leave of absence in January. O'Toole's leave—district administration has not divulged the reason for it—is expected to last for the entire spring semester. Lutz said on Wednesday that he is still trying to find a hire. "I've had conversations with a few different individuals," Lutz said. "There's not someone who I've identified yet as available for this position. Who …

New Football Coach for Baldwin-Whitehall on Wednesday

The school board will make its decision that night. Candidates' names have not been revealed.

Less than one month after accepting the resignation of Jim Wehner as the head coach of the Baldwin High School football program, the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board is scheduled to hire a new head coach at its meeting on Wednesday night. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Baldwin-Whitehall School District Office along Curry Road in Whitehall Borough. It is not known if the new coach will assume Wehner's duties stemming from his Personal Fitness position at the high school. That position was taken from Wehner by the school board on Jan. 16 along with declaring all of the football coaching positions in the school district as open. The open positions include all of those at Baldwin High (varsity, junior varsity and ninth-grade teams) …

If it is a sabbatical leave for an approved reason, he could get 1/2 salary but with full deductions taken out for pension, medical, and such. But it could just be another approved leave. In which case it would, as you said, depend on his contract. If the man needs a leave and is entitled to one, I surely hope no one is going to whine about whatever the particulars of such leave may be.   more ›

PHOTOS: Best, Brightest Honored at BHS Senior Awards Ceremony

Many of Baldwin High's approximately 380 seniors earned scholarships and other awards on Wednesday night.

"You represent the finest that we have here at Baldwin High School" were the words of Baldwin Principal Kevin O'Toole on Wednesday night as he and several other high school administrators and teachers, plus a few special guests, honored a large chunk of Baldwin's Class of 2012 just eight days prior to graduation. Wednesday's ceremony, held at the Baldwin High auditorium at around 7 p.m. following a senior dinner, allowed employees from the Baldwin-Whitehall School District as well as family and friends to recognize members of this year's graduating class who have earned notable titles, scholarships and other awards as a result of their time at the high school. O'Toole, the evening's master of ceremonies, reflected on what it means to say …

Guidelines Revision for Board Vacancies and Other Notes from April 4 B-W School Board Mtg.

A special budget meeting is announced, school spirit apparel, AP tests, graduation speakers, bus concerns, and other items.

B-W Student Reps Revisit 'Disgusting' Hall Passes Issue Read here. School Leaders Consider Revising Guidelines for Filling Board Seats There are policies, and then, there are guidelines. Members of the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board are required to abide by policies that either they or past board members set for the B-W School District, but guidelines are another story—merely suggestions for board members for how to operate in particular situations. Either way, board members must approve policies and guidelines alike before they are put into practice. And one set of guidelines that board members are considering for adoption this April lays out suggestions for filling vacant board seats. The guidelines being considered—available here on the…

POLL: B-W Student Reps Revisit 'Disgusting' Hall Passes Issue

Sophomore Victoria Schmotzer uses research to prove her point.

Are hall passes at Baldwin High School sanitary? That was a concern voiced to Baldwin-Whitehall School District administration by Edward Lippl, the district's senior class representative to the B-W School Board, at the first board meeting of the 2011-12 school year. And with time winding down in his high school career, Lippl says that he's never gotten a sufficient response. So at Wednesday night's board meeting, Lippl brought backup, teaming with sophomore class rep Victoria Schmotzer to make a compelling case that hall passes at Baldwin High are, as Schmotzer puts it, "disgusting." Before speaking on the issue on Wednesday, Schmotzer and Lippl distributed handouts to board members and other attendants of the meeting that detail research …

B-W School Leaders Debate 70-Percent Eligibility Topic

Students falling below a 70 in any core subject will miss extracurricular time, starting Sunday.

UPDATE: Read this story in conjunction with the one seen here. A revision made in November to the Baldwin-Whitehall School District's policy on student participation in extracurricular activities (Policy 122) goes into effect on Sunday, March 11. The Baldwin-Whitehall School Board voted, 8-1, in November to revise that policy so that students in grades 7-12 with below a 70-percent grade in any core subject could not participate in any extracurricular activity, from basketball to Math League to Drama Club and beyond. A paragraph of that policy now reads, "To be eligible for any extracurricular activity, a student must maintain a 2.0 overall grade point average in all courses taken and must maintain passing grades in English, mathematics, …

Baldwin-Whitehall Schools Getting Serious About Online Courses

'This is not a way to farm out jobs. This is a way to bring our kids back in.' - Assistant Superintendent John Wilkinson

Students may soon have the ability to earn Baldwin High School diplomas from their comfort of their own homes. In response to changing times in public education—and trying to prevent students from leaving their district to attend cyber charter schools—Baldwin-Whitehall School District leaders had a lengthy discussion at a B-W School Board meeting on Wednesday night in regard to running their own online academic program. Dr. John D. Wilkinson, the school district's assistant superintendent of secondary education, presented the idea for the program to the board, saying that he envisions Baldwin-Whitehall as offering only a "hybrid" model in the near future—one that would allow students to take some classes online and some inside actual …
