The star goalkeeper stops 26 of 27 shots to stymie Sweden.

Whitehall Borough native John Gibson was named as the MVP of the Under-20 World Ice Hockey "Junior" Championships after helping to lead Team USA to a 3-1 win over Sweden in Saturday morning's gold-medal game. Gibson, also chosen as a tournament all-star and the tourney's top goalkeeper, allowed just nine goals in almost seven full games at the junior championships, including a shutout. He finished with a goals-against average of 1.36 and .955 saves percentage. The game was broadcast live on the NHL Network, starting at 8 a.m. Eastern time. It will be re-broadcast on the same channel at 8 p.m. The United States rebounded from a 2-2 preliminary round to win three straight games in the tournament playoffs. The 6-foot-3, 222-pound Gibson was …

Whitehall's John Gibson Signs with NHL's Anaheim Ducks

Gibson graduated from St. Gabriel's and played freshman ice hockey at Baldwin High School.

The NHL's Anaheim Ducks have signed Whitehall Borough native and former Baldwin High School freshman goalkeeper John Gibson to a three-year entry-level contract, according to the Ducks' website. No financial terms of the deal have been disclosed.  Gibson was selected by the Ducks in the second round (39th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Still just 18 years old, the one-time St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin School student, who had originally planned to enroll at the University of Michigan this school year, now plays for the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League. With Kitchener, he has posted a .926 save percentage, tied for the league's best, and his goals against average is at 2.81. He has a 20-10 record. The 6-foot-3, …

Gibson graduated from St. Gabriel's and played freshman ice hockey at Baldwin High School.

The Anaheim Ducks selected Whitehall Borough native and former Baldwin High School freshman goalkeeper John Gibson in the second round of the NHL's annual draft at Xcel Energy Center on Saturday. Gibson, who grew up on Spring Valley Drive, graduated from St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin School in Whitehall before attending Baldwin High through 10th grade. He played on Baldwin's freshman ice hockey team as an eighth-grader and ninth-grader but eventually moved to Ann Arbor, MI, to play for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. Harlem Wizards Entertain for a Worthy Cause

Proceeds from Tuesday night's game against the South Hills Dream Makers benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia.

The final score never matters in games like these. While the Harlem Wizards won convincingly over the South Hills Dream Makers at Baldwin High School on Tuesday night, the evening's true winner was the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia, which received all of the proceeds from a nearly packed house at Baldwin High's varsity gymnasium paying anywhere from $8 to $12 per ticket. The Wizards vs. Dream Makers basketball event was the brainchild of a group of fourth-grade girls from the Baldwin-Whitehall area, and their parents, who formed the Dream Makers team for the sole purpose of sponsoring a one-day fundraising event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes of children with life-threatening…

Harlem Wizards Basketball to Play Local Community Leaders at Baldwin High

Proceeds from the May 24 game will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia.

The Harlem Wizards, a touring professional entertainment basketball team made up of former collegiate and professional players often compared to the Harlem Globetrotters, will play a charity basketball game on Tuesday, May 24, at Baldwin High School for the benefit of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia. The Wizards will be square off at 7 p.m. that night against the South Hills Dream Makers, a team of community leaders and former and current athletes, teachers, coaches and staff affiliated with the Baldwin-Whitehall School District, St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin School and Brentwood High School. Doors open at 6 p.m. One member of the Dream Makers team is John Gibson, a goalkeeper for USA …

Former St. Gabe’s Student, Baldwin High Freshman Goalie Likely NHL Draft Pick This June

Whitehall’s John Gibson is a Team USA standout.

Ice hockey wasn’t the most popular sport at St. Gabe’s. In fact, it wasn’t even sponsored. But for a kid from the Borough of Whitehall who was born at pretty much the height of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ popularity in the early 1990s, hockey was going to be a part of his life somehow. Little did John Gibson – a 6-foot-3, 205-pound goalkeeper – know that the sport, which he started playing at the age of 3, would take him all around the world and perhaps one day to the National Hockey League. Indeed, NHL Central Scouting lists John, 17, as the highest-ranking United States Hockey League goalkeeper for the 2011 NHL Draft, to be held in St. Paul, Minn., from June 24-25. John plays for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program in the USHL. …
