WATCH: Brave Souls Take the 'Plunge' for Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall

Volunteers raise funds for area development by jumping into the Mon' River as part of the annual Pittsburgh Polar Plunge.

Hundreds of Pittsburghers successively broke the world's 3-meter doggypaddle record on New Year's Day after braving 36-degree temperatures to jump into the Monongahela River. And nearly 30 of those record-breakers were community leaders and volunteers from Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs. The Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall folks, headed by John F. Slater—owner of the John F. Slater Funeral Home in Brentwood and the board chair of Economic Development South—accepted sponsorships of varying amounts to make good on their promise of arctic swimming. DETAILS: Oktoberfest Street Fair Near Sankey Ave. on Oct. 4

German? Perfect. Not German? No problem. The Brentwood Business Owners Association and Economic Development South present the 7th Annual Oktoberfest Street Fair (open to all) near the intersection of Brownsville Road and Sankey Avenue on Thursday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. The fair not only celebrates German heritage—highlighting food, beer and music—but it also allows businesses and other organizations in the Brownsville Road/Sankey Avenue Business District to showcase themselves, said John F. Slater of the John F. Slater Funeral Home in Brentwood Borough. Slater is helping to organize the fair, which will take place on the border of Brentwood and Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhood. PRICE CORRECTION: Starting at 5 p.m., workers at the Stewart Avenue Evangelical Lutheran Church at 2810 Brownsville Rd. will serve a German-style dinner. Bill Thomas, a trustee at the church, said that the dinner will cost $8 per plate. Dinner includes iced tea and dessert.   more ›
