These cases from the Pittsburgh area did not have a happy ending, but finding those missing persons might have brought closure to families.
As early as this July, people in the law enforcement community knew that the remains of Amanda Sue Myers of Pittsburgh had been identified through DNA comparison. However, it was only about a week ago when Pittsburgh police finally released the news. In July, two separate sources told Patch that Myers had been identified but that police wanted to hold off on releasing information until some interviews had been conducted. Amanda, who was 22 years old at the time of her death, was last seen alive in Pittsburgh at the end of 1999 but may have been in Florida and Tennessee as late as April 2000. She was not reported missing until 2007, according to the Pennsylvania Missing Persons website. Known unofficially as Homestead Jane Doe, Amanda was …

Kevin Rice wants to help students to prepare for careers, not debt.
The measure of a school district's success has long been how well it prepares its students for college. But with the rising costs of higher education and the emergence of new, domestic energy jobs, perhaps that measurement is changing. Such was the theme of Kevin E. Rice's presentation to the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board on Wednesday night. Rice has been the director of the Steel Center Area Vocational Technical School in Jefferson Hills Borough since January, and as the school's director, Rice oversees the career/technical education (CTE) of students from 11 nearby school districts, including Baldwin-Whitehall's, by using those districts' public tax dollars. Rice said on Wednesday that he takes those public tax dollars to heart and …

The 'Fats'/'Pat' incident is now believed to have happened in Carrick.
UPDATE: The owner of Shawn Ryan's Pub said that he has reviewed security tapes from the night of the incident and that no one fitting the description of the alleged attacker was in his bar. Baldwin Borough police Chief Michael Scott said that a case involving a local stabbing this past Tuesday has moved in a different direction—specifically, away from Baldwin Borough. Initially, Baldwin police had been told that a man known as either "Fats" or "Pat" had stabbed a Whitehall Borough resident as the victim and the victim's girlfriend were leaving Hog's Bar & Grill on Prospect Road in Baldwin. "(The victim's) girlfriend I guess got into an argument with (the attacker) in the bar," Scott said on Oct. 9. "Over what? We don't know." But the story…

'Fats' (or 'Pat') is wanted for questioning in the stabbing of a Whitehall man outside of a bar on Prospect Road.
IMPORTANT UPDATE (Oct. 15): Baldwin Stabbing Case Takes Very Strange Turn—Away from Baldwin Baldwin Borough police are looking for a man known as either "Fats" or "Pat." The man is a suspect wanted for questioning for his involvement in a stabbing incident outside of a bar on Prospect Road early on Tuesday morning, Baldwin police Chief Michael Scott said. Scott said that Baldwin police learned of the stabbing shortly before 2 a.m. when an Allegheny County police dispatcher relayed that information to them via workers at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh's Oakland area. The victim, a Whitehall Borough resident, claims to have been stabbed shortly after midnight on Tuesday, Scott said, when he and his girlfriend left Hog's Bar & Grill…

Crack sealing from Practice Tee Drive to the Elizabeth Bridge.
Both directions of a long stretch of Route 51 in Jefferson Hills Borough—from Practice Tee Drive to the Elizabeth Bridge—will undergo crack and joint sealing from Oct. 9 through Oct. 16. The work begins on Tuesday night near the Blue Flame restaurant and will cause short-term, slow-moving lane closures on both north and south Route 51 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays during that time period. Crack and joint sealing is a preservation activity that prolongs the life of road surfaces by preventing moisture from entering cracks and joints, according to a news release from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11-0. Moisture can cause potholes and premature deterioration, requiring costly repairs. Matcon Diamond, Inc., of …

Patch has been featuring missing persons, homicide victims and the unidentified dead with open case files, but today, we are honoring the labors of those who work these cases by sharing some solved ones.
When someone goes missing, there's usually a large effort by law enforcement, family and friends to find him or her. When someone is murdered without a known suspect, police and relatives try to find out who did it. And when a body is discovered, and no kin claim it, advocates who work on such cases push to link circumstances or DNA to bring them home. In honor of Labor Day, Patch is recognizing the efforts of all those who work to solve these cases, bring the missing and unidentified home, and provide closure to the families or justice for the victims of unsolved homicides. Included in that are the many people who give the missing and unidentified "temporary homes" on websites like The Doe Network or NamUs until they are found or claimed…
