Baldwin, Whitehall Mayors Sign Gun Control Letter to Obama

Sandy Bennett, James Nowalk join Mayors Against Illegal Guns movement.

The mayors of Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs have added their signatures to a gun control letter written to U.S. President Barack Obama. The letter is part of a Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) movement co-chaired by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and is dated for Dec. 19, five days after a tragedy in Newtown, CT, that caused the shooting deaths of 26 people, including 20 children. Here is the letter that Baldwin Mayor Alexander R. Bennett Jr. and Whitehall Mayor James F. Nowalk have added their names to: Dear President Obama, On Friday, December 14th the entire nation watched as parents stood outside the Sandy Hook Elementary School and waited, desperately hoping to be reunited with their children. That …

Precautionary measures. We need armed guards in our schools,Democraps complain about the cost... how much has been spent on "the war on drugs"? The judicial system does not punish criminals who disregard gun laws. In a school zone why not double the maximum sentence! Did the mother have her guns in a safe, or trigger locks on them? She had a child with a mental disability, this alone would …   more ›

Route 51 Eat'n Park to Expand (and More Whitehall Council Notes)

Leftovers from Wednesday night's borough meeting.

Changes Coming at Route 51 Eat'n Park Whitehall Borough Councilman Philip Lahr shared the news at Wednesday night's council meeting that big changes are coming at the Route 51 Eat'n Park. Eat'n Park management is planning on "a great deal of improvements" there, Lahr said, including restroom renovations, an increase in actual building space and the addition of curbside pickup for to-go orders. Lahr said that restaurant management is still in the process of having its plans approved by Whitehall's Planning and Zoning officials. No More Curbside Electronics Pickup in Whitehall Councilman Robert McKown said on Wednesday that, starting on Jan. 1, 2013, solid waste collectors in Whitehall will no longer pick up electronics equipment alongside …

Why Can't Local Police Use Radar to Catch Speeders?

Mayors from Whitehall, Baldwin boroughs don't see why only state police have that authority.

If you're going to speed in Baldwin-Whitehall, just be sure to do it in front of the local cops. At a Whitehall Borough Council meeting on Wednesday night, Whitehall Mayor James F. Nowalk voiced his displeasure with laws that prevent Pennsylvania's municipal police officers from using radar to catch speeding motorists. According to Nowalk and Baldwin Borough Mayor Alexander R. Bennett Jr., who feels the same as Nowalk does, Pennsylvania's state police officers are the only ones allowed to use radar to catch the state's speeders. And both mayors say that Pennsylvania is the only U.S. state that employs such a practice. Bennett went so far as to call Pennsylvania a "laughingstock" because of it at a Baldwin Council meeting on Tuesday night. …

High Grass, Shaky Buildings, Other Eyesores Irking Whitehall

The borough council also discussed on Wednesday night upcoming library renovations as well as Community Day success.

High Grass, Shaky Buildings, Other Eyesores At a Whitehall Borough Council meeting on Wednesday night, Councilman Philip Lahr talked about foreclosures in Whitehall and the eyesores that they can become. "Some of these properties have been vacant for four years," Lahr said. "The grass is high, and I know of one property where a structure is starting to collapse." Borough solicitor Irving Firman told Lahr that Whitehall administration is trying to take legal action on some of those foreclosed properties and issue municipal liens and tax collecting. "In some cases," Firman said, "there are absentee landlords or there is some difficulty tracking down the particular bank or LLC (limited liability company) that owns the properties." Councilman …

Whitehall Officials Select Citizen of the Year

'Jason Coll Day' will be proclaimed on Aug. 25.

Saturday, Aug. 25, will not only be Community Day for Whitehall Borough; it will also be "Jason Coll Day." Coll—a composer, a musical director and a member of South Hills Area Against Dangerous Drilling (SHAADD)—has been chosen by Whitehall's elected officials as the borough's 18th annual Citizen of the Year. Coll will officially be crowned on Aug. 25 at Snyder Park at around 10 a.m., as Mayor James F. Nowalk and the Whitehall Council will proclaim that day "Jason Coll Day" in front of finishers and spectators of the borough's annual 5,000-meter race and 1-mile fun walk. Coll, a 1989 graduate of Baldwin High School and a 1993 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama, is the founder of Frog Prince Theatricals. He served as …

Storage Facility, Flooding Complaints, Flags Disposal (Whitehall Council Notes)

Borough leaders convened on Wednesday night.

New Storage Facility The Whitehall Borough Council learned more at Wednesday night's borough meeting about the self-storage facility coming to Weyman Road at the spot of an old junkyard. Speaking on behalf of the facility's management, Kim Gales-Dunn, of the civil engineering company J.R. Gales & Associates, Inc., officially requested that they be permitted to build nine steel buildings on the Weyman property. That plan was not met with much resistance by borough leaders; though, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi expressed concern with vehicles exiting the site onto Weyman. "Maybe the exit could be drawn back into the property versus coming out to the road to avoid obstructing traffic," Dolfi said. "It's about perception/reaction time…

Whenever I scout for good locations for our self-storage business, it is also very important to get the local council’s approval, and ensure that it does not disturb the peace of the locality. It is very important to have several considerations and assure the local council that it will not cause more damage to the locality. One of the councils I have met, I was faced with indignation, but …   more ›

July 18 Whitehall Council Notes

New sewage biller, Veman Avenue work and other items.

New Sewage Biller Starting in January, Whitehall Borough property owners will receive their sewage bills from Jordan Tax Service, the Whitehall Council has decided by a unanimous vote. Borough Manager James E. Leventry made the recommendation to switch from Berkheimer Tax Administrator at a council meeting on Wednesday night. Leventry said after the meeting that he simply believed that Jordan Tax would do a better job for Whitehall. Veman Avenue Work Veman Avenue in front of Baldwin High School will undergo paving repairs on Thursday, which will necessitate the overnight closure of that road from Beall Drive to Rhodes Avenue. The road will reopen on Friday morning. Whitehall Councilman Robert McKown, who has been outspoken in his desire to…

Backyard Fire Pits an Issue Facing Whitehall Council

Also, a discussion about a war memorial, and other leftovers from a June 20 borough meeting.

Residents Have Fire Pits Concerns The aroma of a backyard fire is a welcome smell to many folks in Whitehall Borough. But to some others, it's a nuisance. Because with the smell comes the smoke. That was the story from a discussion among Whitehall council members at a borough meeting on Wednesday night. Some council members admitted that they enjoy backyard fire pits in the borough, but some of those same members said that they understand why their neighbors might not. Councilman Philip Lahr said that residents tell him that they can't open their windows when a neighbor starts a fire. Borough Manager James E. Leventry said that whenever the weather gets nice every year, Whitehall's municipal offices' phones start to ring with calls from …

Who Can Use Cherryvale Path?

Whitehall mayor defends pedestrians' use.

If you ask Whitehall Borough Mayor James F. Nowalk, there's really no question: The Cherryvale Path is fair game for area residents and visitors who want to take that shortcut from Cherryvale Drive to Springmeadow Court. But at least one person disagrees with the mayor, posting "PRIVATE PROPERTY" and "NO TRESPASSING" signs along the walkway and adjoining ramp. Technically, that person is at least half-right: The Cherryvale Path is on private property. But Mayor Nowalk said at a Whitehall Council meeting on Wednesday night that the path has been traversed for at least two decades and that pedestrians have a legal "easement" to use it. The path even predates the owned parcel that it sits on between Cherryvale and the Whitehall Farms …

Actually...... You can't stop us and we CAN stop you for one simple reason.... Springmeadow Ct. is a public road, the Cherryvale driveway is a Private road. Furthermore, we do not utilize your road when we are having work done on our street.
