Nearby: Is the Mysterious B-25 Still in the Monongahela River?

Since the crash of the plane on Jan. 31, 1956, its fate has been the source of speculation and legend. What do you think?

In the 57 years since a B-25 Mitchell bomber ditched in the Monongahela River near Homestead and Baldwin boroughs, its fate has been a tale filled with mystery, suspicion and intrigue. The plane was over New Alexandria, PA, when it began experiencing problems with its level of fuel. Its pilot shifted course and began heading for Greater Pittsburgh Airport (as it was then known), and as more fuel seemed to disappear, targeted Allegheny County Airport instead. When its engines ceased operating near the populated area approaching Pittsburgh, the pilot advised his crew that they would ditch in the river. At 4:10 p.m. on Jan. 31, 1956, the World War II relic, which was refitted as a trainer, touched down with its wing flaps down and landing …

We will reveal the answer on Monday.

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch has partnered with the Baldwin Historical Society to bring you a weekly trivia question that delves into our area's colorful past. Pat Lombardi and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures. Unsolved Cases: These Are Among Western PA's Solved Ones

These cases from the Pittsburgh area did not have a happy ending, but finding those missing persons might have brought closure to families.

As early as this July, people in the law enforcement community knew that the remains of Amanda Sue Myers of Pittsburgh had been identified through DNA comparison. However, it was only about a week ago when Pittsburgh police finally released the news. In July, two separate sources told Patch that Myers had been identified but that police wanted to hold off on releasing information until some interviews had been conducted. Amanda, who was 22 years old at the time of her death, was last seen alive in Pittsburgh at the end of 1999 but may have been in Florida and Tennessee as late as April 2000. She was not reported missing until 2007, according to the Pennsylvania Missing Persons website.  Known unofficially as Homestead Jane Doe, Amanda was …

Politicians Put the Fun in Fundraiser at Candidates' Comedy Night

Both Republicans and Democrats came out to support the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund on Thursday night.

Usually, audiences at the Pittsburgh Improv are laughing at politicians, but, at Candidates' Comedy Night, they were laughing with them. The fundraiser for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund had politicians reaching across the aisles on Thursday night so that their constituents could roll in them. Among those taking to The Waterfront stage in Homestead Borough to tell jokes, perform skits and even sing for charity were seven politicians directly representing parts of Baldwin-Whitehall: incumbent Democrat Jay Costa, of Pennsylvania's 43rd Senatorial District, which includes Baldwin Borough; Lawrence Maggi, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives' 18th District of Pennsylvania, including Whitehall Borough; …

And Bingo Was My Name-O: Volunteering at the Leland Resource Center

A fun space in Baldwin Borough welcomes area seniors five days per week.

There seldom are things more serious than bingo. At least, that's what I learned after calling a few games at the Leland Resource Center on Thursday afternoon. You could hear a pin drop, even as I cracked a great joke about "B12" also being my favorite vitamin. But the place had been plenty noisy since around 9:30 when the doors opened. Local seniors came in to play cards, chew the fat and chew lunch. The bingo started at noon, as it does every Thursday at the fun space in south Baldwin Borough—right after mealtime. Thursday, as it turns out, is typically the Leland Resource Center's busiest day, and around 45 people showed up to take advantage of services offered there by LifeSpan—a Homestead Borough-based organization that provides, as …
