Readshaw Bill Takes on Liquor License Transfers

The state representative's proposal would allow local municipalities to control the number and type of liquor license establishments located in a specific community.

State Rep. Harry A. Readshaw, whose 36th Legislative District includes parts of Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs, has introduced House Bill 262, which would allow local municipalities to control the number and type of liquor license establishments located in a specific community. Current law only limits liquor licenses on a countywide level. "Under my bill, municipalities would have the right to control the number of these establishments, not the state," Readshaw said in a news release. "Local communities are better judges of the needs and abuses of alcohol on a more personal level. "While I have heard numerous complaints about bars in the South Side, this bill would give all communities an avenue to say enough is enough." (Readshaw's …

Whitehall Councilwoman Considering Local Bus Service

Linda Book is pursuing travel options for—roughly speaking—the area between Caste Village and Brentwood Towne Square.

Considering the recent loss of a Port Authority of Allegheny County bus route along Baptist Road, Whitehall Borough Councilwoman Linda J. Book discussed an idea at Wednesday night's council meeting of an in-borough transportation service. "I don't know exactly the numbers of the folks that require bus transportation," Book said on Wednesday, "but it's a significant number of homes on Baptist Road that have been abandoned by Port Authority." Book said that she has spoken with Economic Development South Executive Director Greg Jones regarding that situation and has brainstormed with him "to see if we can get some transportation, perhaps, from one end—the Caste Village area—up to the Brentwood Towne (Square) area, where the large hub of Route…

A new "Honoring Our Veterans" vehicle license plate authorized by that bill would help to finance the Veterans Trust Fund. Of the new plate's fee, $15 would go directly to the trust fund. Also contributing to the …

PA House Approves New State Budget

Republicans call spending plan responsible; Democrats decry social service cuts.

The Pennsylvania Senate is expected to vote on Friday on a $27.66-billion spending plan that holds the line on taxes for the new fiscal year, which begins on Sunday. The state House of Representatives approved the measure by a vote of 120-81 on Thursday night, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. The new budget increases spending by less than 2 percent over this year's budget, the Harrisburg Patriot-News reported. The spending plan maintains current funding for public schools and colleges. However, it eliminates the state Department of Public Welfare's cash assistance program and cuts $84 million—half of what Gov. Tom Corbett had proposed cutting for county-provided human services. The budget also includes a tax break that could exceed $1…
