Cool Springs Golf Reopens

The popular center closed suddenly in mid-March.

A drive by the Cool Springs Golf and Family Recreation Center on Hamilton Road in Bethel Park on Tuesday afternoon showed the center's miniature golf and upper driving range areas to be open for business. The lower range and batting cages were closed. The center closed suddenly in mid-March when Cool Springs senior management met with some employees to tell them they would close until—tentatively—mid-April. Bob Salera, the head professional and director of instruction at Cool Springs Golf School, said that that was the first time that Cool Springs had closed since he started working at the facility in 1997. Despite the reopening, Cool Springs' website—www.coolspringsgolfcenter.com—is out of service as of Wednesday morning.  --- Sign up for…

Popular Local Golf Center Suddenly Closes

The Bethel Park facility is tentatively scheduled to reopen in April.

As golf season is teeing off in the area, a popular golf center is closed—for now. Senior management of the Cool Springs Golf and Family Recreation Center on Hamilton Road in Bethel Park met with some of their employees on Monday to tell them that the center is closed until—tentatively—April 15, according to Bob Salera, the head professional and director of instruction at Cool Springs Golf School. Salera said that this is the first time that Cool Springs has closed since he started working at the facility in 1997. Cool Springs is a popular spot for its driving range, mini golf course and seasonal batting cages.  This article originally appeared on the UpperSt.Clair Patch.  --- Follow the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch on Facebook and Twitter. …

B-W Trivia: Which Country Club Is This?

We will reveal the answer on Monday.

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch has partnered with the Baldwin Historical Society to bring you a weekly trivia question that delves into our area's colorful past. Pat Lombardi and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures. Here is this week's question: Above is an old illustration. The swimming pool is large, with a wading pool and patio lounge area, and the clubhouse has dining facilities, a bar & grill, a pro shop and locker rooms with a summer snack shop. Which country club is this? …

Baldwin's Zack Taylor Will Defend WPIAL Golf Title Oct. 3

The sophomore just made the cut at Tuesday's semifinals.

UPDATE: Taylor finished nine strokes back at the WPIAL championship and did not qualify for the state championship. A year after sinking a birdie putt on the 18th green to become the first freshman to win an individual WPIAL golf title, Baldwin High School sophomore Zack Taylor has put himself in position to repeat as champion this coming Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Fox Chapel Golf Club. Taylor was the 12th and final qualifier from his WPIAL semifinals round, held at the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course on Tuesday. He will join 24 other finalists at the WPIAL final on Oct. 3. Taylor, a Baldwin Borough kid with no country club membership, is a rarity among the WPIAL's best golfers. Read (and watch) more about him here. Should Taylor repeat as …

Fall Sports Tryouts: Harrison Middle and Baldwin High Schools

Some activities start before classes do. Do you have your paperwork done?

Students interested in competing on sports teams at J.E. Harrison Middle and Baldwin High schools this coming fall season have some paperwork to complete. Although classes for the Baldwin-Whitehall School District's 2012-13 school year won't start until Tuesday, Aug. 28, some of the district's fall sports teams start activites as early as Aug. 13. That paperwork (also available in the media gallery above), in three packets, is available here: Packet 1 (11 pages) Packet 2 (one page) Packet 3 (one page) Included in those packets is paperwork for an authorized medical examiner to fill out upon completion…

Streetlights Removal in Baldwin Should Start This Month

Also, the Baldwin Pool will stay open late on Community Day and other notes from a May 15 borough meeting.

Streetlights Removal Starting Crews from Duquesne Light will descend on Baldwin Borough to remove certain streetlights starting as early as the end of this month, Baldwin Manager John Barrett said a borough council meeting on Tuesday night. Barrett said that the removal process, which is expected to save borough taxpayers an estimated $66,000 annually in energy costs, should take 60-90 days to complete. A joint recommendation by Baldwin Mayor Alexander R. Bennett Jr. and Baldwin police Sgt. Kim Reising was to take away 376 borough lights, but after hearing concerns from residents during two special public meetings (1, 2) on the subject—as well as from emails and phone calls—Bennett and Reising pared their elimination list down by 10 lights…

I have done enough research on LED lights and found that the cost of what your company and these other fly by night companies are saying are not true, that it is something that you have to really push to sell.
