'We're all on the same side, folks.' - Councilman Glenn Nagy
Ever since the South Hills Country Club leased part of its land to Chesapeake Energy to allow high-volume slickwater hydraulic fracturing in Whitehall Borough, Whitehall's elected officials have taken some heat. But in front of a large crowd at Wednesday night's Whitehall Council meeting, those officials stood up for themselves during often-heated exchanges with borough residents. In a room not meant to fit more than 50 or 60 people, those residents overflowed out of the meeting space and used public comments time to question whether or not their council members were doing enough to protect them from hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking"—a controversial component of Marcellus Shale natural-gas drilling that has been linked to dangerous …

Shade Tree Commission The Whitehall Borough Council unanimously passed a resolution on Wednesday night to enter into a multi-municipal Shade Tree Commission with nearby Baldwin and Brentwood boroughs. Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall—along with the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Carrick and Overbrook—are already part of multi-municipal planning group for the Route 51 corridor, and the Shade Tree Commission would be an extension of that cooperation. The commission will be made up of nine non-compensated members appointed for five-year terms, with the possible addition of three other members. "This is a good thing," said Whitehall Mayor James F. Nowalk, who has been championing the commission idea. "It's purely advisory and will result in …

Community group says that Chesapeake Energy reps were at the country club on Super Bowl Sunday, but club officials have denied that.
If a tree falls in the woods, but no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? How about a truck? A South Hills Area Against Dangerous Drilling (SHAADD) group member has reported observing at least one vehicle from the natural-gas drilling company Chesapeake Energy on South Hills Country Club property in recent weeks, but no one else has reported that activity. And according to South Hills C.C. officials, that SHAADD member is mistaken. After hearing SHAADD member Sarah Scholl speak on behalf of her community group at a Whitehall Borough council meeting on Wednesday night, council President William J. Veith said that he has spoken with country club officials and that those officials are denying that Chesapeake vehicles have been on …

And a few other notes from a borough meeting on Tuesday night.
Council Reorganization Linda J. Book passed the gavel to new Whitehall Borough Council President William J. Veith on Tuesday night during the borough's reorganizing session, where three re-elected officials were sworn in and new committee appointments were finalized. Re-elected to four-year terms in November were Philip Lahr, Harold Berkoben and Robert McKown. Lahr and Berkoben have both sat on the Whitehall Council for 12 years. McKown has served since 1993 with the exception of two years. In addition to the swearing-in of those re-elected officials by Magisterial District Judge David J. Barton, a new council president and vice president were chosen. Instead of voting on the positions, Whitehall officials fill the slots on an annual, …

Dolfi during public comments time of the Whitehall Borough Council meeting on Wednesday night and asked borough officials if they had read a letter that he sent to them regarding fees charged against him by the borough's "incompetent" police department. Borough solicitor Irving Firman said that he had read the letter but that the man's claim hasn't been determined to have merit. The man said that he would file a lawsuit against the borough and stormed out of the council's meeting room, pausing…

Paperwork in Process to Save Borough Around $178,000 Per Year Harold Berkoben informed fellow Whitehall Borough Council members and council meeting attendants on Wednesday night that the completion of paperwork is in progress that “will save the borough about $178,000 (per year)” in health insurance costs. On Oct. 5, the council approved a new five-year contract with its public works employees that will start on Jan. 1, 2012, and will provide those employees with a 3-percent raise per year. The contract also switches insurance groups for those employees, which accounts for the savings. “And it’s basically for the same coverage,” Berkoben said. Next year, most Whitehall employees will be covered under a Laborers’ District Council of Western…

Great facts Sawyer!!!!! But you are letting them get to you. It is hard to get people educated when they don't want to know the facts. They just want to know the myths. Don't worry, they will be the first too complain while paying for $4 gas. There have been tens of thousands of wells drilled in PA/OH/WV but they want to focus on the few accidents that have occurred. Let's just keep paying over $…   more ›
