NA moves on to the quarterfinals. Baldwin's season is done.

North Allegheny High School's girls basketball team hadn't won a game in 10 days—and hadn't even played in one in eight—but the Tigers quickly shook off that rust against Baldwin High School in a WPIAL AAAA playoffs first-round win on Tuesday night. North Allegheny (20-3 overall) won the game's opening tip at neutral-site North Hills High School, got the ball to sophomore forward Meg Morningstar for the first two points and never trailed on its way to a 56-33 pounding of the lower-seeded Highlanders (11-12 overall). The 6-foot-1 Morningstar, who finished with 11 points, got her own …

The Highlanders move on to face North Allegheny on Tuesday.
To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. (Don't hesitate to include photos of the cheerleaders, coaches and fans.) Baldwin High School didn't look like the lower seed. The Highlanders, forced to play Greater Latrobe High School in a WPIAL AAAA championships play-in game on Tuesday night, dominated the higher-seeded Wildcats at both ends of the floor to move on the tournament's first round with a 54-39 win. Latrobe (9-14 overall) saved its best for first by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in this neutral-site game at Penn-Trafford High School. But Baldwin's size, speed and superior shooting took over immediately, and the Highlanders (11-11 overall) finished the first quarter on a 19-6 run. "That was maybe…

The Highlanders shine in a do-or-die game.
To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. (Don't hesitate to include photos of the pep band, dance team, coaches and fans.) A late 3-pointer from junior guard Nikki Corcoran may end up being the biggest shot of the season for Baldwin High School's girls basketball team, which stunned visiting Bethel Park High School, 46-38, in a WPIAL AAAA Section 4 game on Friday night. With Baldwin clinging to a 1-point lead with fewer than two minutes left in its regular season and needing a win to make the 2013 WPIAL playoffs, Corcoran calmy stepped back and drained a 3-ball from the left wing to push the Highlanders' lead to two possessions. Bethel Park, which came into the game with just two losses and is …

Senior-less Baldwin controls its own destiny.
It's simple, really: Win, and they're in. That's the formula for the Baldwin High School girls basketball team, which has two section games left this season to earn a spot in the 2013 WPIAL playoffs. Should the Highlanders win both games, they're in the show—no matter what. But maybe that won't be so easy, especially when Baldwin's final two section opponents of the regular season—Mt. Lebanon (18-2 overall) and Bethel Park (17-2 overall) high schools—have a combined 35-4 record. But rest easy, Baldwin fans. The Highlanders could lose one or even both of those games and still make it to the postseason. After Baldwin's 66-44 win over Peters Township High School on Thursday night, Baldwin and Upper St. Clair high schools sit tied for the …

There'll be plenty of challenges for Baldwin, but the team seems ready to adapt.
"Speed and defense." If Head Coach Gavin Prosser has been trying to drive something into the brains of his players this preseason, he's certainly getting that done. When asked to identify what might be the calling card of the 2012-13 Baldwin High School girls varsity basketball team, Prosser mentioned "speed and defense," and that was after two of his players answered the same question with the same three words. The Baldwin High girls have added a promising 6-foot freshman center—Carly Lutz—to their young roster this season, but the team will mostly have to rely on smaller players, most of whom have less scoring pedigree than three of the squad's leaders from a season ago. And all of three of those ladies have graduated. Gone from the …

Taylor Wentzel has capped her career with the Baldwin High School girls basketball program by earning a spot on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's 2011-12 South Fabulous Five team. Wentzel, a 5-foot-6 senior point guard, served as one of Baldwin's tri-captains during this past season when the Highlanders were WPIAL semifinalists. Baldwin went on to win two games in the state playoffs before finishing its season with a spirited loss to perennial power Mt. Lebanon High School at Duquesne University's A.J. Palumbo Center. The Post-Gazette reports that Wentzel averaged 14.2 points per game this past season. Baldwin's Head Coach Gavin Prosser said that she's headed to NCAA Division I Rider University on a basketball scholarship. --- Follow the …

But the Highlanders give Mt. Lebanon a scare through three quarters.
Call it destiny. Well, maybe a curse. Baldwin High School, which has appeared in the girls state (PIAA) basketball playoffs in three out of the past four years—and won at least one state playoffs game every time—have always drawn Mt. Lebanon High School later in the bracket. And each time, Mt. Lebanon—the three-time defending state champion—has ended Baldwin's season. Such was the case again on Tuesday night in the second round of the PIAA tournament at Duquesne University's A.J. Palumbo Center, where the Blue Devils, WPIAL champions in three out of the past four years, improved to 25-3 for the season with a 45-32 win over Baldwin. The Highlanders finish the 2011-12 campaign at 19-8. The game was played much closer than the final score …

Again, the Highlanders will have to beat Mt. Lebanon to stay alive in the playoffs.
0-4. Baldwin High School's varsity girls basketball team has accomplished a lot in the past four years—quite a lot in fact. Try four WPIAL playoffs appearances. Three state playoffs trips. Twelve postseason victories in total. But that doesn't change one thing. In the past four postseasons, Baldwin is 0-4 against Mt. Lebanon High School. More or less, the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils (24-3 this season)—state champions three years running—have eliminated the Highlanders (19-7) from the playoffs in each of the past three seasons. But that could all change in a hurry on Tuesday night when the teams meet again at Duquesne University's A.J. Palumbo Center at 6:30. It'll be a second-round state (PIAA) playoffs game this year, but the last time that …

Eagles advance to WPIAL girls basketball title game; Highlanders await state playoffs.
Baldwin vs. Oakland Catholic at North Allegheny had a similar feel this season as it did a year ago. Same opponent, same place, same result. For the second straight season on Tuesday, Oakland Catholic High School eliminated Baldwin High School from the WPIAL girls basketball playoffs (at neutral-site North Allegheny High School). But this year's 58-41 loss feels a little different. For one, this was a WPIAL AAAA semifinal, and Baldwin High has already clinched a spot in the PIAA (state) playoffs—something that it didn't do with its quarterfinal loss to the Eagles a year ago. For another, the Highlanders generally like the way that they're playing right now. "We're much more of a team and determined this year," Baldwin's sophomore guard …

Highlanders beat Shaler Area High School, 39-28, on Friday night.
UPDATE: Time and place are set: BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL's VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL team will play Oakland Catholic High School at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (at neutral-site North Allegheny High School) in the WPIAL semifinals. (Tickets cost $6 each.) Baldwin High School's varsity girls basketball team turned the lights out on Shaler Area High School's WPIAL title dreams on Friday night—literally. After a power outage delayed Friday's WPIAL AAAA playoffs game at neutral-site Fox Chapel Area High School for 41 minutes midway through the third quarter, Baldwin High finished the game on a 16-6 run to win, 39-28, and advance to the WPIAL's "final four," which starts Tuesday with a semifinals game against Oakland Catholic High School. The Highlanders (17-6…
