Employees help out, and so can readers.
It's been said that it's far better to have a neighbor who's near than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in to hurricane relief efforts, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and in Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy-ravaged areas in New Jersey and on Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate: https://donate.networkforgood.org/aol. "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who …

The measure comes in response to Hurricane Sandy.
Because of the damaging effects of Hurricane Sandy across the state, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Secretary Barry J. Schoch has authorized an extension of the expiration dates for Pennsylvania driver's licenses, identification cards and vehicle inspections/registrations. Oct. 31 expiration dates for vehicle registrations and safety and emissions inspections have been extended until Nov. 15, as have expiration dates between Oct. 26 and Nov. 15 for driver's licenses and identification cards. These extensions apply for customers statewide. --- Follow the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch on Facebook and Twitter. Sign up for the daily Baldwin-Whitehall newsletter.

After the numbers jumped from 350 to 650, Duquesne Light says that less than 100 homes are in the dark.
As of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, less than 100 Duquesne Light customers are without power as a result of the strong winds and rain from Superstorm Sandy that swept through western Pennsylvania on Monday. That number is down from 650 customers earlier on Tuesday. Duquesne Light expects power to be restored to all customers by 11 p.m. Workers have spent the day restoring power by removing trees and repairing downed wires. Company spokesman Brian Knavish has said that the outages are scattered throughout Allegheny and Beaver counties. Duquesne Light warns that downed wires are a safety hazard and should be avoided because of the risk of electrical shock and injury. In addition, residents are advised to not drive over or go near downed wires. …
Area children can get their goodies from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 3.
Final updates in bold italics. ... Hurricane Sandy will come dressed as "Frankenstorm" this Halloween season, and the significant storm event has caused the trick-or-treating times in all three Baldwin-Whitehall municipalities to be delayed. Trick-or-treating was originally scheduled for Halloween night, Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Baldwin Borough, Whitehall Borough and Baldwin Township, but municipal leaders have agreed to push the event back to Saturday night, Nov. 3, also from 6 to 8. --- Follow the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch on Facebook and Twitter. As of 4 p.m., the normal trouble spots are untroubled. There is a short delay on East Willock Road, however.
A day after the Pittsburgh area received the worst part of its share of Hurricane Sandy, the oft-flooded roads in and around Baldwin-Whitehall are clear in time for Tuesday's evening rush hour. I drove around some of these troubled spots—Streets Run, Glass Run, Becks Run, McNeilly and East Willock roads—and the Route 51-Route 88 intersection, from 3 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and all are very navigable, according at least to this writer. There is some standing water, of course, on Streets Run Road, especially near Chapon's Greenhouses, but the road is not closed and is safe to use (in my opinion). There is a short delay in the 5000 block of East Willock Road in Baldwin Borough, as workers are repairing a busted a water line. Check back with the…

To go along with a two-hour delay for that district's schools, students at Baldwin Borough's Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic School and Whitehall Borough's St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin School will also have a two-hour delay on Tuesday, according to KDKA. Saint Elizabeth officials have canceled morning preschool, as well. Whitehall's Good Shepherd Christian Preschool and Tender Care Learning Centers will both have 10 a.m. starts, according to WPXI.
