Wilkinsburg Kidnap-Murder Case Still Brings New Tips

After the ‘woman at the bus stop’ tells her story about the day that schoolgirl Beth Barr disappeared in 1977, other Patch readers offer more clues.

Editor's note: This story originally ran in November 2011 on many western Pennsylvania Patch sites. Since that time, several persons have come forward with more information that they feel can be helpful to the case, including potential suspects, possible vehicles used and other information, which has been shared with Allegheny County homicide detectives. The identity of the woman interviewed for this story is being withheld for her safety. The woman stood alone at about 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 23, 1977, at a Port Authority Transit stop in Wilkinsburg Borough, waiting for the bus that would take her to her job in downtown Pittsburgh. The 24-year-old had grown up in Wilkinsburg, and she and her husband had purchased a property on nearby Rebecca …

PA's U.S. House District 14 Candidate: Hans Lessmann

Lessmann is one of three candidates for a seat that covers Baldwin Township and Baldwin Borough.

Whitehall Supports (But Doesn't Join) Lawsuit Against State Drilling Regulation

The Whitehall Council decided on Wednesday to issue a letter backing opposition to Act 13.

The Whitehall Borough Council voted on Wednesday night to issue a letter in support of a local lawsuit challenging Act 13, the recently inked Pennsylvania law that bars local governments from regulating Marcellus Shale drilling and that goes into effect on April 14. The letter of support, which came on the heels of a similar gesture by the Pittsburgh City Council, has no legal implications for Whitehall, where zoning regulations limit Marcellus Shale drilling to four locations in the borough. Whitehall's South Hills Country Club has leased part of its land for drilling to Chesapeake Energy, but country club officials have said that no such drilling has occurred. Seven area municipalities, including Cecil and Peters townships, have signed …

Gender Reveal Cakes a Growing Trend

Boy or girl? Only your baker knows!

More and more Pittsburgh-area couples are finding out the sex of their babies in a much sweeter way—with a gender reveal cake. "We've definitely seen a growing trend," said Megan Fialkovick, an Oakmont Bakery employee. "It's kind of just starting to pop up all over the place," said Courtney Seymour, a Potomac Bakery employee. Some couples choose to keep the moment private and intimate or with close family and friends. Others use it as an excuse to throw a party or make their baby shower even more exciting. Here's how a gender reveal cake generally works: An ultrasound technician writes the sex of your baby down on a piece of paper and seals it in an envelope. The mom and dad then take the sealed envelope—if they can stand the suspense—to …
