Whitehall AutoZone Employee Charged with Stealing from Work

And three other stories in these borough police notes.

AutoZone Employee Charged with Retail Theft Police officers went to the AutoZone on Route 51 in Whitehall Borough at around 11:50 a.m. on Thursday to speak with the store's loss prevention officer, according to Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi. The loss prevention officer informed police that an employee of the store—Danielle Hibbs, 36, of 2089 Plainview Ave. in Pittsburgh's Brookline neighborhood—was caught taking money from the store's register and stealing merchandise, Dolfi said. The approximate value of the cash and merchandise taken was $87. The theft occurred across numerous incidents during an unspecified period of time, but "it came to a head" on Thursday, Dolfi said. Whitehall police are citing Hibbs with retail theft. …

Baldwin Manager Pursuing All LED Streetlights

And other borough municipal notes.

An All-LED Borough? The future may indeed be bright for Baldwin Borough. No, the downed streetlights aren't coming back. But in an interview on Wednesday, borough Manager John Barrett said that Duquesne Light anticipates that LED technology will be available for its served municipalities in June of 2014. "We have been informed that a formal request has been made with the PUC (Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission) for an LED streetlight tariff," Barrett said. "The LED tariff means that Duquesne Light will have a tariff rate to charge municipalities for LED lighting that they would make available. Up until now, Duquesne Light has stated that they can't provide LED lighting for a number of reasons—one being that a tariff has not been …

Morning, folks. According to Barrett, the only way that Baldwin can "shop" for other energy providers in this instance would be if the borough assumed ownership of its light poles. The poles are currently the property of Duquesne Light, and the borough is charged monthly for their use. Borough administration has requested that Duquesne Light provide them with a cost to purchase the poles. But …   more ›

Baldwin Manager Urges Duquesne Light to Pursue LED Technology

Also, the mayor is asked about Sgt. Miller, and news regarding a Kurt Hinish fundraiser.

How Are Those Lights Coming? Baldwin Borough Manager John Barrett said at Tuesday night's Baldwin Council meeting that he continues to urge Duquesne Light officials to investigate the possibility of installing LED lights in Baldwin. However, Duquesne Light, which owns the borough's streetlights, still does not have an LED lighting option ready for Baldwin in order to help the borough to save on energy costs. In 2012, Baldwin officials gave Duquesne Light the go-ahead to eliminate more than 27 percent of the borough's streetlights (all non-LED) in order to save money. Barrett said that he wrote a letter to Duquesne Light saying, essentially, "In our opinion, nothing's been done." Baldwin Mayor Alexander R. Bennett Jr. suggested that perhaps…

Four Copper Thefts Reported Recently in Whitehall

Also, a man leaving Princess Lanes was turned over to constables for an outstanding warrant.

Copper Thefts Copper thieves have hit Duquesne Light's Elwyn Power Station in Whitehall Borough three times this month, Whitehall police Deputy Chief Richard M. Danko said. As with similar Jan. 20 and Jan. 4 reports, Duquesne Light corporate security personnel contacted Whitehall police this past Saturday to report that one or more people had recently broken into the power station on Earlsdale Road and removed copper wiring. Most recently removed was ground wire in 20-to-25 different places, often in areas of high voltage, Danko said, and a spool of copper wire weighing approximately 500 pounds. The spool is valued at around $5,000, Danko said, while the other copper taken is valued between $1,000 and $2,000. Police are investigating the …

Man Sets Off Own Smoke Alarm, Hit with Marijuana Charge

And five other stories in these Whitehall Borough police notes.

Marijuana Alarm Whitehall Borough police responded to a smoke alarm at 4348 Seton Dr. at around 6:39 p.m. on Jan. 15 only to find that the homeowner's marijuana smoke admittedly had caused the alarm, Whitehall police Deputy Chief Richard M. Danko said. The home's alarm notifies local police when it is triggered. When police arrived at 4348 Seton, they met the homeowner—William J. Korach, 33—at his doorway and detected an odor of marijuana coming from the house. Korach said that the alarm was false, but upon further investigation, police located a small amount of marijuana and some drug paraphernalia that Korach said was his, Danko said. The deputy chief said that Korach admitted to smoking marijuana and that that's what set off his alarm. …

Smoking odors, are the hardest odors to eliminate, why do they hang, around when the sources of the odors are no longer there? The offensive smells you associate with odor is almost always gases released from their sources. These invisible gases attach onto floating air molecules, which drift with the air currents in the room. Over time some dissipate and others most notably smoking and urine …   more ›

Streetlights Remain an Issue for Some Baldwin Residents

'The street is dark.' - Dave Brogan, Meadowcrest Road

Residents from close, parallel streets in south Baldwin Borough didn't plan to show up at Tuesday night's regular Baldwin Council meeting with the same complaint, they said. It just worked out that way. The complaint: It's too dark in Baldwin. Speaking to the council first during public-comments time was Sandra Beyer of Blossom Drive. This marked Beyer's third time in front of the council since June regarding the topic of streetlights reduction in Baldwin, including the elimination of 11 lights on Blossom. On Tuesday, Beyer pointed out that multiple homes in her 600 block of Blossom, where at least two of three scheduled light-eliminations have been completed, have been victimized recently by burglaries. Baldwin police Chief Michael Scott …

UPDATES: Less than 100 Duquesne Light Customers without Power

After the numbers jumped from 350 to 650, Duquesne Light says that less than 100 homes are in the dark.

As of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, less than 100 Duquesne Light customers are without power as a result of the strong winds and rain from Superstorm Sandy that swept through western Pennsylvania on Monday. That number is down from 650 customers earlier on Tuesday. Duquesne Light expects power to be restored to all customers by 11 p.m. Workers have spent the day restoring power by removing trees and repairing downed wires. Company spokesman Brian Knavish has said that the outages are scattered throughout Allegheny and Beaver counties. Duquesne Light warns that downed wires are a safety hazard and should be avoided because of the risk of electrical shock and injury.  In addition, residents are advised to not drive over or go near downed wires. …

LOOK: Baldwin Man Has State's Oldest Fridge

Richard Linnert's Frigidaire was made by General Motors in 1937.

In 1937, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the U.S. president, gas cost 20 cents per gallon, and Hilda Geyer purchased a Frigidaire refrigerator, an appliance that would be held by her family for the next 75 years. And on Tuesday afternoon in north Baldwin Borough, Richard Linnert, the late Geyer's nephew, was officially recognized as owning "Pennsylvania's Oldest Refrigerator." Linnert, a Duquesne Light customer, recycled the 1937 Frigidaire in July through Duquesne Light's Watt Choices program and received a $35 rebate check as his reward for removing the outdated, energy-draining device from the electric grid. But little did Linnert, who has owned the fridge's home in the 700 block of Becks Run Road since 1998, know just how much the old …

Whitehall Man Arrested Twice in 3 Hours

It started with a one-vehicle crash on East Barlind Drive ...

Whitehall Borough police officers arrested Adnan Omeragic, 51, at around 3:34 p.m. on Saturday and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol after Omeragic crashed his van into a utility pole on East Barlind Drive, Whitehall police Deputy Chief Richard M. Danko said. Then, after being booked at the Whitehall police station and released to the custody of his daughter, police arrested Omeragic again after he was found walking in the middle of a Whitehall stretch of Provost Road at around 6:10 p.m. This time, Omeragic, who lives at 4512 W. Barlind Dr. in Whitehall, was charged with public drunkenness, disorderly conduct and obstruction of highways or other public passages. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail. Police …

Streetlights Removal in Baldwin Should Start This Month

Also, the Baldwin Pool will stay open late on Community Day and other notes from a May 15 borough meeting.

Streetlights Removal Starting Crews from Duquesne Light will descend on Baldwin Borough to remove certain streetlights starting as early as the end of this month, Baldwin Manager John Barrett said a borough council meeting on Tuesday night. Barrett said that the removal process, which is expected to save borough taxpayers an estimated $66,000 annually in energy costs, should take 60-90 days to complete. A joint recommendation by Baldwin Mayor Alexander R. Bennett Jr. and Baldwin police Sgt. Kim Reising was to take away 376 borough lights, but after hearing concerns from residents during two special public meetings (1, 2) on the subject—as well as from emails and phone calls—Bennett and Reising pared their elimination list down by 10 lights…
